My "new" bike is an early 2000s C-dale Jekyll. The rest of the mtb fleet is a mid 90s Giant ATX 970 and an old Raleigh Talon rigid that I got for 20 bucks.
The Jekyll is a blast. The Giant will be awesome i I ever find a decent fork for it for cheap and a set of riser bars. I really like it's ancient coilover rear shock. Rides like buttah. The Raleigh is awesome. Such a beautiful ride...until things get fast and bumpy. Then my wrists go on strike.

Couldn't pass up the opportunity to post these two. The 1988 Nishiki Ariel at the top is the bike I picked up in 2005 that got me into mountain biking. It's still my #1 bike for Rails to Trails, but has long since not used on single track. The beauty on the bottom is a 92 Ariel that I take out on the trails once in a while. It's very reliable, but, for some reason very slow. Not shown is the 92 Nishiki Cascade that I'm building up for the fun of it and a 92 Specialized Stumpjumper, again just for fun. I've got a 88 Panasonic that I'm working on that I'll probably sell unless it turns out to be super slick.

Recently scored a 2000-ish SID Race for the 1997-ish KHS. I've chopped an inch offa the steerer tube since this pic. I'll have to get a pic of the cut setup soon.

Like many, I debated on buying new or rebuilding the old. My MTB is a '98 Schwinn Moab 2 I bought new and hasn't seen much use of the last 10 years. Decided to rebuild/upgrade the Moab rather than buying new made more sense. Replaced about everything but the drive train and did a disc brake conversion (new rims & fork for the conversion, the rest replacing worn out parts like a shifter, cables, etc.) Cost less than half of what I would have spent on a new MTB. I've also got some extra wheels w/ street tires and I'm playing with different cassettes. May use those if my wife decdes she wants t disc brake conversion on hers.
Wife has a '97 or so Trek 6000 she bought new. I tore it down and rebuilt it for her, though not as drastic as the Moab rebuild. She was on the fence about a new MTB too until I got it done.

I ride a 93 GT Timberline. Recently upgraded it with drop bars and brifters. Fun and solid old bike!

Not much to tell. The kid was never too smart (common sense wise). He had been dating some girl and they had an open relationship. Despite the fact he had a different girl about every other night he saw her with someone else and lost it (guess he never made the connection what an open relationship was). He got drunk and went out on his bike one night after we told him not to do anything stupid. He threatened to beat the crap out of the guy. We got a call from some friends off campus that he had been seen going down a few flights of long stairs by the basketball arena and later was found passed out in a park, apparently going down hill on his bike (already damaged before that) and wiped out. Bent the front wheel at about a 90 degree angle and bent the frame somehow. Not sure where he was going (she lived at the other end of campus,) or what he was trying to do. We fixed the bike (frame was still bent a little but rideable) but he later went on to other dumb stuff rivaling this. You can fix a bike but you can't fix stupid...

My primary MTB is a 1984 Univega Alpina Ultima. Top of the line at the time and still a pretty nice ride. Relaxed geometry, double butted frame, still does a great job for a fully rigid bike. I've considered putting drops on it and making it a touring bike if I ever take a notion to tour.

Funny I found this thread, I just picked up an older Giant ATX 840.
It was a basket case when I got it so I am fixing it up.
This is a pic of it after putting it all back together with some new parts

This is an awful picture, but I picked up a '98 Cannondale F1000 a couple weeks ago. haven't gotten a chance to do any serious riding, but have hit a couple spots on campus I've been eyeing up for the past few years and love the way this thing rides. Hopefully I can keep it going for years. Seems to have been cared for well and ridden sparingly.
Have a seat sitting at home in CT that will go on (its actually a cannondale, randomly) and i think im gonna pull the bar end brushgard things off.
My previous riding experience has been rented downhill bikes and an 04ish specialized rockhopper, so this is a welcome upgrade, even if its much older.

Trek Y-33 here… Shimano XTR.. it even has old heavy 3 spoke SPIN wheels. My LBS loves the bike.. says it has character.. When parts go bad it can be expensive to keep vintage though.

McCready,
Not a lot of folks know it, but a great many Schwinn & Nishiki
were actually built by Giant. At one point following a strike in
Chicago, 80% of Schwinns were made by Giant. In the "80s
Schwinn was set to merge with Giant, but reneged on the deal.
Schwinn went bankrupt & ended up sold to China. Giant went on
to sell $380 million in bikes the following year. Your Sierra & Mesa
Runner are likely Giants.

Fool O' crap
This is a 2002 Litspeed Kitsuma - built ahead of it's time. disc only, 5" travel, slack (enough) HA, 2.4" tire, and built strong as hell. 3.8# frame. I've had plenty before and after - but this one will always be my favorite ride. 25# as you see it, I have had it 22.5 without too much of a headache. (Note - TALAS is at low travel setting in the pic)

I've been riding the heck out of my 1991 specialized team stump jumper lately. I added trekking bars to it and platform pedals and a black seat post; the bike is otherwise stock with a full sun tour grease guard gruppo. This was a great off road bike but I use it now almost entirely to ride around town on.
I have a 1989 specialized stumpjumper comp which I'm in the process of taking apart as I'd like to clean it up and add some drops to turn into a touring rig:

I am just posting an updated photo of my Giant ATX here.
I found a Rockshox Duke single crown fork which happened to be the same colour as the bike.
The shock cost me a can of WD40 and a can of Liquid Wrench.

Shimano Certified
All of mine are 1993s Giant Sedona ATXs Much new components but the frames are still older.
This is the 3rd repaint, 3rd suspension fork and now has full XTR shifting. UST tubeless and I added the disc mount on the back(yay for cromo). 12 consecutive XC seasons and a good number of wins. I like it so much I found another one to turn into a drop-bar commuter. Maybe that one will get repainted this year...
