Handlebars: Straight or risers?
 

I'm looking to add a different handlebar to my stock bike. I'd like to go with a riser bar,somewhat similar to a bmx but shorter and no bar across it. I perfer more upright postion when I ride and I don't do downhills. Anybody add a riser to your mtb? Pics?

No change to the stem length - don't go above a 1" riser it will stretch you out a lot.

Risers are EVERYWHERE now - so don't see why you need pics :)

Profile Designs (a company more noted for tri/road bars - - and who also owns the Titec brand) makes one of the taller "plain" riser bars. Standard 25.4mm dia., so it will fit most standard (non-OS) stems and comes in a 60mm (almost 2½" rise) and a 10° sweep. Profile is a brand a lot of local shops carry because wholesaler QBP stocks them. Stop in yours and see if they have/can get them for you.

I like bars with rise and sweep. I put them on my dirtbikes, MTBs and even my hybrid.

That's a Truvativ Holzfeller World Cup bar, which Universal Cycles has right now for only $44. It's only available OS (31.8mm) though. It was the lightest (265g) inexpensive bar I could find with a large amount of rise and sweep (pullback).

??? Worst advice ever. I don't feel "at home" on a bike w/o a HiRise gnarbar. Why would you advise anyone of this? It's like saying don't raise your saddle more than XXmm or don't use a stem higher than 5 deg.

And as far as it "stretching you out...I run my bars just slightly angled back. (maybe just a degree) A taller bar angled back will actually bring the grips closer to you...not stretch you out. Even if you run them perfectly straight up and down...it's not stretching you out. It's raising your hands straight up an inch, not moving them away from you.

Easton carbon and Exotic alloy (eBay). You have to be selective, the variance on the rise and shape can vary dramatically, think through where you want you hands.

The ones was looking at belong on cruisers. I was looking at one with a 5" rise,I could tilt it back to please my comfort. I don't ride the deep woods or do the knarley downhills. I ride mostly on the road with dirt trails,grass,and gravel roads.The bars would have me sit at a more upright position. I also want to be able to ride longer distances on my bike,so comfort is the main key. I have seen mtb's with all sorts of handlebars,anything from drops,areobars,beach cruiser bars and the norm. I'm just seeing what would be best for me.

Aha. When you shop for bars then, you'll want comfort/cruiser bars... not MTB. Getting the right diameter is key, but I do believe a lot of cruisers have the thinner bars.

Right,and I'm cool with that. So,would I need a new stem as well? Some people suggested that I get a hybrid bike,but I like mountain bikes because to me they are the SUV's of the bike world. My next bike will most likely be a mountain bike as well. No sense in changing to me if you know what you like.

Are you talking Beach Cruisers or BMX Cruisers?

5" rise sounds like a beach cruiser bar. :) Probably got massive sweep too!

I like these handlebars. I would tilt them back towards me to make it a easier ride. What I don't like is the fact I would to most likely change all the cables out.
