How do you destroy a fork???
Hi there,
I have a sr suntour m2000 fork, it is absolutely useless, it bottoms out very easily. I have been trying to persuade my parents to allow me to buy another one, but they believe that I have a fork and that it works. My only option seems to be to destroy this one and get another one. However, bringing a hammer to it won't work, I need to break it in a way that looks like it wasn't very good and that it broke because it couldn't handle what I have been doing to it. So far, I have been pulling wheelies and dropping down, causing the thing to bottom out badly. The problem is that I have buckled my front wheel slightly by doing this. The wheel is still fine, however, I don't want it to get worse, I need to somehow get rid of the fork!!! Help please!!! |
1. Most JRA methods of breaking a fork will likely break something else also, like your front wheel that you already wrecked, maybe some bones.
2. Get a job! 3. I reckon my con would be removing the fork and locking up your bike at school sans fork/front wheel. Then call mommy and daddy for a ride all tearful like and say you need a ride cuz someone stole your front wheel and fork. 4. But really just work with what you got or get a job. |
It isn't really the fact that I can't afford a fork, it is my parents being dicks and not letting me buy one, I know it sounds as though I am a wus but believe me, my parents will go mental, If I bought a fork behind their back, they would find out (see it on my bike) send it back, ask for a refund and keep the money themselves, or equivilant. No, have got to break it, pretending it was stolen wouldn't work because it would probably result in the police being called in!!!

Oh, so you've got a job? I'd move out. Time to get yourself a real fork and a bachelor pad!
Is there a dollar amount they'd be OK with? Maybe you can cruise eBay to hit that price point. |
Take it apart and remove the spring so it just plain doesn't work? (Disclaimer - I have no idea if this works or if the fork is built like this)
|
My wife was against me getting a new fork until I almost broke my wrist one day on one of our rides. Next day the Tora went on after she saw how swollen my wrist was. I don't recommend this method as it hurt like hell but it just happened to be one of those situations where a fork would be cheaper than surgery and time off work.
Try explaining to them that it is worn out, causing pain to you and damaging other parts (the front wheel). Try explaining it to them logically so it doesn't come across like a little kid just wanting a new toy. That being said it also depends on what you are riding (which you did not mention) as putting a $350 fork on a $200 bike won't make a lot of sense in their eyes. If that is the case you would be better off putting the money toward a new bike. |
Try an 8 foot drop-to-flat. The broken wheel, fork and wrists should be more than enough to get them to come around.
|
yeah, I am scanning ebay for something around 60-70 pounds. I can't remove the spring - too obvious, will probably have to try the 8 footer. I don't want to spend much on a fork, just enough to give something with a slightly better than average performance but nothing high performance. My friend gave me the idea of putting sand between the tubes so that it would rub and ruin the fork, will it work or not???
|
^^^ Yep, put sand it - that show your parents.
Holy hell, I'm glad I don't have kids like you - but then again, if you were my kid I'd buy you a Fox 40 and call it good. |
Dart 3's are on sale for 88 pounds at Jenson. I dunno if they like shipping to limey's though.
|
yeah that had been my original idea to buy, problem is that takes pm brakes, my current fork has IS ones, any ideas better than sand??? - it is an external coil mechanism.

If you were my kid, I'd let you buy a fork, as long as it was your money. But if I found out you were planning to purposely wreck your old fork to try to trick me, wrecking other parts of your bike in the meantime, I'd take away your bike until you learned the value of money...and calling me a dick online wouldn't help matters. Grow up, kid.

BTW, what brand and model bike do you have? |
Firstly Zephyr11, I don't want to trick them, like you said, if you were my parent you would let me buy a fork. I want to be able to buy a fork and sell my old one, not for much but every little helps!!! My parents don't believe in internet selling so that is out of the window. I think I might get a friend to buy one for me and tell my parents that he bought it,it didn't fit his bike, instead of sending it back, I said I would buy it off him. It is not all a complete lie, he did buy it and it didn't fit his bike. I then bought it off him as he doesn't really want it. My bike is a carrera banshee x bought from another friend that doesn't use it, no clue why it had this dodgee fork on it, but it made buying cheap (and parents were happy with what I did)!!!
