Talking to the guy at my LBS he said it sounds like I may have had a slightly bent cage, we found evidence a rock may have hit my derailleur before the accident. This then made a weak spot in the derailleur and landing sideways at speed flexed the cage and the cage caught a spoke and whoop. Bye Bye drivetrain. We think that the cage flexed in because it looked like a spoke caught a jokey wheel, a couple of teeth on one are bent at 45degrees out.

Sounds like a bit of routine maintenance would have caught that. The little cable tip slipped off the end or my rear derailleur cable, and the cable got sucked into my happy little CNC'd jockey wheel. I found this out on the trail when shifting got sucky. Had I done a 2 minute pre-ride inspection, we wouldn't have been pushing our tandem up the steeps. Is your bike going to be fixed soon?

You really don't know much about what can happen in a bike crash, do you. Parts like the deraillieur and the spokes can be broken really easily, same with the hanger. And with the pinch bolt tightened enough the cable will not slide right on through if that small end cap falls off.

I had been doing DH earlier in the day, shuttle runs on a really rocky track, but I stopped because my shuttle aka Passenger train up to Belair couldn't go any furhter. A freight train derailled and the train couldn't go so I went to the city jump track. Iu'm thinking that it may have been hit by the rock earlier that day so I didn't have a chance to see it. Also as Kona said those things are really easy to muck up.

You obviously didn't read my earlier comments. I suggested he replace his hanger bolt with a Ti or aluminium one so that he doesn't damage his hanger again. And yes, you're right. Even though I've ony been riding for a little less than 30 years, I haven't broken very many parts. I guess you crash a lot more than me. Our pinch bolt was fine, but the cable tip came off, and the frayed cable end stuffed up the jockey wheel. I'm considering soldering the cable ends in the future as we use this bike for some epic rides, and it travels at speeds far higher than any normal mountain bike, so maintenance and reliability are very important.

Cable freys are a nightmare, and with all the technological advances so far, you'd figure that one of big names would come up with a system that would completely do away with the deraillieur and the deraillieur hanger. Ti or aluminum bolts don't make a difference, I've damaged both Ti and Aluminum hangerbolts and have damaged hangers with ti or aluminum bolts.

I think he's getting at, the kind of bolt's he uses/talkerd abuout break before the hanger does. If so, this still wouldn't have saved mt derailleur.

Yeah, frayed cables suck. And they're so damn sharp and pointy. As far as the pivot bolt, that's pretty much it. The steel pivot bolt is never going to break. Our tandem is a custom Ti frame, and I forgot to spec a replaceable hanger. All of our bikes have a Ti or aluminium bolt anyway, I'm just hoping if anything bad ever happens, the bolt breaks, and not the hanger. At worst, I'd have to order a new rear section for the frame. I still have 2 spare rear derailleurs in my garage, which practically assure me that they'll never be needed. The only parts that fail are the ones you have no spares for. Are we all in agreement on that?

Use your tire and hit em over. If parents say anything say "You shouldn't have your kids blocking the track in the first place. Go with the flow, not against it. If anything, you should be in deep crap for having your kids go on tracks which aren't suitable and also endangering the safety of other riders".

I have a little trail behind my house, but its at a park. There are these idiots always messing up the trail and littering, so my friend and I fixed it and cleaned it. then they don't let us ride at the trail maybe their 9 years old. So we are speeding through the trail and one of them pulls out in front of me with his "Roadmaster" and I ram that kid, they should just let us ride and be more aware. Most of the time I have to ride when I get out of school because they aren't out of school at the same time. But I really hate how a little kid tries to be the authority of an older kid, once I rammed him he has been more respectful and careful. The ram wasn't intentional though.

No I won't, my last exam is next Monday, and it's Maths. i'm set for it, being in the top group and getting freaky hard tests all the time gets you prepared for an exam set for the whole year. I aced my midyear because of that. So I'll only do a bit on Sat and spend all Sunday at the Disorder 5 premier and dirt jam

talk to the parnets if they stay there. Tell them that this isn't a place for little 5,6,7 yr olds to be riding around. let them know that riding here isn't save. your riding at your own risk and anything could happen. then after if they don't listen, plow the kids to shreds and say "told ya, anything could happen, he was in the way etc etc."

I haven't experienced this much on a bike, because I'm mainly just a trail rider, but I can definitely relate -
It has driven me crazy for years when I'm skiing. Little kids (and stupid adults) cutting me off in approaches or sitting around in the landing areas. I can understand it on an intermediate trail - you just have to accept it, but it happens to me on expert level bump runs, and in terrain parks all the time. WTF?? I know when I was a kid just learning to BMX freestyle, I knew enough to stay out of the way of the more advanced riders. Of course, I also knew they'd get off their bikes and kick my a$$ if I didn't. I don't remember anyone suing back then...

I say sue the little punk's parents for $140.

In my neighbourhood, parents of 5-7 year olds have taken to this brilliant idea:
They put up fluorescent "child playing" pylons (from ToysR us) in the middle of the road, to let the neighbours driving home know that the precious fruit of their loins are playing in the middle of the road unsupervised, except for 2 plastic cones. This is perhaps the dumbest thing I've seen since "baby on board" signs.

So, junior down the street sets up a ramp on his driveway, and jumps his bike into traffic, where I almost hit him. I got out and yelled at the child (~5), then proceeded to yell at the mother. An hour later, Dad appears at my door telling me that I should slow down for kids in the neighbourhood (I was doing ~30km/h).
My response to this idiot was, "I know you think what you're doing is right, let's just hope you're not dead right one day."

Next day, same thing, except someone else almost hit the kid. This time, both the other driver and I called child protection services, who considered this behaviour negligent.

I don't blame the kids, I blame the parents, but unfortunately in the US, if you hit one of those kids by accident, they will sue you.

The problem is that neither sram or shimano are getting behind it.

to get back to the original post, something similar happened to me in the local forest, except i was in the air when the kid decided to ride onto my landing, nothing i could do, ran clean into him, after pullingmyself out of the bushes and making sure he was ok, (although i was hoping id killed him) i realized i hadnt broken nething but his bike
i got up and rode away with nothing more then a few broken spokes( luckily), i was able to roll out and not get caught up in a bike.
wish these kids would watch what the hell theyre doing.

I am in college, GO HOKIES, and the freeride club does campus rides ALOT we ALWAYS haveatleast two people spotting, alerting the rider and the public, Tech would be pissed if we creamed a student.

I used to DJ and BMX and we had kids walk all over the course, I joined the over-the-bar-scar-club when this ass decided to throw a shovel on the course making a hole about the size of a fist right after a jump. GEUSS where my front tire planted! Right smak dab in the middle of the hole. I was LIVID. N E One wanna start a group or sumthin in NOVA?

hey can someone tell me why the suburbs of toronto think they are cool all the sudden with little nicknames for all the different areas....i know im totally off topic but i just find it funny how much of a bunch of townies people from pickering out are when it come to toronto....(townies are people who are scared of the city for those of you who dont know) back on topic screw the kids...little ******* id fully run them over, cause if your at an indoor track, or a place where some company built jumps, tracks, etc...there has to be a waiver sign posted somewhere, cause its pretty well set that if there is even one sign at the plcae that says "ride at own risk" or somethin like that "we are not responsible for injury" etc....then no one can be sueing people....totaly ******** the thing people try to sue for today, like some women in ontario is gonna try to sue tim hortons( a big name coffee company in canada) cause her coffee, which is suppposed to be served HOT burtn her kids lap when she spilled it.....wtf is this ****, its coffee, maybe if she wasnt a ****ing clutz her kid would be fine......

anyways, thats for reading my rant....peace
