How fast do you wear out your rear tire?
 

I went out riding today and realized i had no traction with my worn out tire. Not to mention my stopping power sucked. Anyhow its a wtb velociraptor rear tire. I came new on my bike in march or april is when i got my bike. Is this 8 months to short a time or a decent amount of time? I just got into mtn biking this year so i have no clue. thanks. Hope my lbs has velociraptors. It was a nice tire. The front i might change when it wears out.

If you ride regularly and got 8 months out of the tire I'd say you did quite well. I can go through a tire in a month with regular, aggressive XC.

I go through DH tires in 4-5 hard rides, honestly. A velociraptor will last a long time though because its made out of really hard rubber. Id say 8 months of good riding is about average for those things.

HOLY CRAP You wear out tires that fast!!?

I tohught it was like 2 years! JEBUS! I'll be getting those Pana Racers sooner than I thought. How many miles/kms approximately do you change them.

I noticed when skidding and hard breaking that my rear really marks easily (leaves a mark on the ground) don't know waht it's called. I should put new 24" tires on my beater bike too than I guess (1000 Miles and 4 years).

Btw, my current tires are some no name CST 26 *1.95 or something. Stock on my '04 Fire Mountain. THe rims too are no names.

4-5 hard rides?.....my Intense's have lasted more than that.....still running strong after 6 day trips of DH.

Well I go through DH tires that fast becuse they're made out of real soft rubber to be grippy, not long-lasting, so they shread on rocks easily. But your XC tires may well last you as long as you can stand to ride them.
Tires are cheap though if you buy them off the net. Often times $10 a pop. And dont let anyone give you crap about not supporting your bike shop either. Its a business not a charity.

In my case, I kind of have to support it because shipping from the US and possible customs charges destroys me.

Hmmm, I'll replace them when I start skidding all over the place. They are not that good...lol.

$10?....try about $60+Shipping for those Intenses, and they wear extremely fast....what do you run?

I didnt say the tires I buy are $10, I was just referring to some XC tires that these guys could use on their bikes.

Oh, and I dont run that intense crap. I like specialized evil twin rollers, because they're cheap for DH tires and work the best of any Ive used, but otherwise Maxxis stuff gets the nod.

I'm looking at the PanaRacer Fire XC Pros Steel Red Bead. What kind of wear length can I expect from those?

DH tires...usually once a month I replace. I have found my kenda rear on my bighit to last a long time and be sticky. Very good.

Xc tires...don't know I use dh tires on it too :D

I used to go through Maxxis tires really easily. I'm not noticing too much wear on the hot S I have on the back right now.

swifferman I was thinking of purchasing a fire xc for my rear as well. But dont know if it would be a good idea. The rear velociraptor tracks pretty well.

Most DH pros who run Maxxis go through a set every run...

About eight months of fairly regular riding sounds about right. I need to replace my rear tire soon too- Just waiting for the one I want to go on the tire sale rack at the bs i get my tires from. I guess you can tell why I get all my tires from there!

Those guys who go through them that quick run the slow reazy's, they are designed to last only about 3 hard runs.

Yep. Very soft tyres. But still, the standard maxxis hardness is still pretty tacky.

I think im going to try the Kendas next year, I also need to get some mud tires....

I know that tioga dh's are really cheap, about 20 bucks cdn. However, they really suck when they're on anything wet.They work well on pavement, clay, grass and that's about it.

I've got the Tioga DH tires...they wear really well. Pretty hard rubber though, so they don't have the best grip but they last forever by DH tire standards.

The nevegal is awesome...definately up there with the best tires I have used. Sticky and doesn't seem to wear fast. I used it almost a month (10 days or so) doing dh and another 10 doing xc on my bighit. Solid tire.

I'm running a Kenda Kollosal on the back right now with a Specialized Roller 2.6" up front.

It seems to be holding up really well... and I've skidded on it a few times now. (oops). I'm diggin this tire though!

Yeah, I really like the Intense tires on intermidiate conditions, the ones I have right now dont shed mud very fast (909's). I ran a Maxxis Mobster up front, and it was a good tire, but I think it would be much better in dry stuff....as I think with most Maxxis tires. I think im going to stick with Intense for mud tires, but I want to try out the Kendas for Intermidiate mud/wet roots. The one thing I LOVE about the Intense tires is the insane sidewalls.....so much better than any DH tire ive tried. Running DH tires at 16psi on a course with lots of sharp rocks, and not flatting or denting a rim is amazing.

When talking about tire wear, we should talk about km/miles on that tire. 8 months is somewhat meaningless, since we don't know how much riding went on those tires.

On my previous bike I rode a pair of Panaracer Fire XC for almost 1000 km with no problems (exclusively XC riding). The tires are probably good for another 1000 km. But I almost never slide my tires around.

Well for dh it is hard to define distance, as, most of us don't use computers.

Cant forget the variables either....lots of rock = lots of wear.
