Steel/Kevlar Bead Tire comparison?
What is the difference? Besides strength (I'm guessing)?
Specifically on the Panaracer Fire XC Pro. On teh Panaracer site they also say an OEM version has been leaked and may be for sale but they dont' state whether it is the kevlar or steel bead. Is it the steel bead? Also, in that low price range, is there a better product? Thanks! |
Kevlar is much lighter.

Kevlar is lighter, easier to remove/install, easier to store (just roll it up). I don't know about strength...I don't think the bead material would make a lot of difference.

So lighter, and easier to remove/install
Don't care about storing it as I only have 1 set of tires. But how much easier is it to install. Will it save me more than 20-30 minutes? |
Kevlar beaded tires are lighter but because "less is more", they are also more expensive (In my experience, they aren't necessarily easier to install). The eternal question relates to spinning weight (Rims, spoke nipples, tires, tubes, pedals/cleats, shoes, etc) and which bicycling gods you pray to. For argument's sake let's say a standard might be that if your wheelset has 400 gram rims, then maybe you should mount sub 600 gram kevlar beaded tires and probably run under 100 gram tubes. If not, go with good quality steel bead tires and standard tubes.

Those panaracer tires are made both in Japan and Taiwan. Get the version from Japan because it has better rubber for more traction. MEC has the kelvar tire made in Japan and Taiwain for $39 I think. Good Luck Ming |
The difference is that one is beaded with steel, and the other with Kevlar.
|
Thanks for clearing that up
