Trail Work
 

I recently adopted a section of trail at Perry Lake MTB trails. just light stuff lopping and mowing. also been doing a lot of freelance lopping at my local trail( long story) Been helping the coordinater at Perry with some bigger projects which adds up to a loss of a weekend day, swinging a pulaski till my grip is gone. BUT! This Sat we have a group of boy scouts to help with a short re-route:thumb:
So do or have any of you done much of this unappreciated endevor?

Now that you mention it, I should probably ask someone next time I see a park employee at the trail head. I'd love to help out if I could. I ride the trails all the time, it's only fair that I should help maintain them.

I have, for our local IMBA-affiliate club (of which I'm also a quasi-member). It's how I keep my firefighting tools from getting rusty in the off-seasons ;).

I've also helped from the desk-jockey end with graphics and editing for grant proposals and such.

I must confess that I have never participated in this. Perhaps I could put my construction experience to work here.
On a side note, as a trail user, I most certainly could afford monetary contribution.

I have to confess I've never done trail with with mountain bikers. More than a few times with runners, and I've ridden some of the trails that we've worked on as runners, but not with a group of bikers with mountain bike trails in mind. I should probably fix that.

Haha. To be totally candid, I 'retired' this year from my volunteer fire dept. after 28 years service. Funny thing is, I think I still hold second-fastest time in the fire district for the Red Card pack test.

You've been pissing and moaning for weeks that you can't ride trails. You don't ride trails anymore.





B2B...I did some work on the Mansion a few times with Mike...and a few times on my own. I suggest that you don't do anything on your own that involves making the world a better place. It will just get destroyed by the trail coordinator:lol:

I've only helped out with the local trail once. They always do work on Saturday mornings and I Always work on Saturday mornings and there's pretty much nothing I can do about it. :( I would love to help out more, simply to get involved and help out more since I'm using the trails and hang out with some more MTBers. They don't want anyone doing anything on their own due to fear that you'll do something they don't want done.

Ha Ha he doesn't know who did it but gave a public thank you in a KTC address. He's been in charge for almost 4 years and never lopped anything. Jeez it took three saturdays just to reel in the upper trail on the state side.He want to do everything from the seat of that mini trackhoe and build gravel 4 wheeler paths when their not allowed. He not a trail runner rider, or hiker so of course he's the perfect man for the job! Ha Ha

Oh...you're talking about that guy on the "other side". :lol: Yeah it's pretty sad. I worked on singletrack with Mike from Ks Trails Council who was an avid hiker. He loves singltrack.

I don't know who that dude is that's in charge of the Parks and Rec side...but he's a tool.

He is actually in charge of all stae parks The KTC must get permission from him to do anything in any of the state parks so Mike must play nice with him. But since the new park is right outside the back door of his office he apointed himself the coordinator of this one. Like I said Long story, but It's the only safe singletrack in town for women to ride by themselves so went in and made it rideable. He get's all the credit for our hard work so it's a good deal for an adminisrater that doesn't want to work hard on a trail. And we get the trail cleared . Really looking forward to Lyle and the boyscout volunteers, sould be able to get a lot done in a short time!

Well "In town" singletrack is the key here, we have other single track , Dornwood is an awesome little 5 mile loop but the parking lot is in one scary neighborhood. The Park we are talking about has a trail head at the Governors Mansion. Under Surveilance 24/7. That makes my wife feel safe.

Petty crime rate in that town is pretty daggum high.

Yes. I make some time each year for trail work. Recently I rode a bunch of old double-track and ATV trails ith a GPS so that a guy mapping out a new route can put everything onto a map to see how the existing trails fit into the picture. I've also done some work this season clearing branches and chopping up small trees by their roots. That last part is hard and unglamorous work, let me tell you.

I've been going to the trails and just walking them (dreaming of riding them:innocent:) the past couple of weeks while I'm building up my new MTB. So no problem with wanting to be there, even if you can't ride in my opinion :thumb:.

I have a seasonal job at Riverside State park and last year my position allowed me to do a lot of trail clearing. Dealing with fallen trees, trail widening, and my favorite weed whacking Little Vietnam This year due to my new position at the park it was harder to get out and take care of trail maintenance. Since I do ride the trails often I could see what needed to be done. But when working the trails people will voice there appreciation and my reply is "This is your Discovery Pass at work" (new fee for Washington state parks use.) My position ended last week for the year but due to a Wal Mart grant they were able to hire a person for two months just to do trail maintenance and put volunteers to work when we get them. The park really apprecitates the voluteers groups.

On a side note Wal Mart gave us a total of $26,000 in grants for park projects. The main one is at the ORV park where a 15 acre youth riding area is going to be built with seperate parking and bathrooms from the main ORV parking area.

Another side note I used to race at Dornwood and Perry lake way back in the day when I lived in Wichita.

Wow, small world huh? Dornwood is a great trail, I'm always worried about the car when I'm riding by myself. But it's cool what they did with that trail for the terrain they had to work with! Did you ever race at Clinton Lake in Lawrence? Can you see D Minor manor from your house?

So THAT'S why the nettles were reaching out for me from the sides of the trail more than usual, huh?

Raced Mt and road in Kansas from 88 to 96. Raced Clinton lake, Quivira Scout range, Hasety Hill and a bunch of other races but there names escape me right now. Or I'm just getting old and the memory isn't what it used to be. During the NORBA days Kansas actually had a healthy off road series.

D lives in the wild hills of Tum Tum and the main mansion is well hidden from prying eyes.:50:

Surprisingly I have yet to meet D. I'm more of a cross country, roadie, cross rider and D a down hiller, huckster rider extrodinaire. So our paths have not crossed yet.

But we do both have one thing incommon, proud Yeti owners.:speedy:

The view must be from Stony Peak, great view. I gave up riding up there a three years ago. The few people in the Saddle Mt community I talk to early on really didn't mind me riding up there. But more houses are being built and I just don't want to press my luck.

The weeds down there were extra bad this year. Many grew over 5ft tall and the steel reinforced line I was using kept breaking. Had to put on the big metal blade to cut through that stuff.
