Steel hardtails
 

Opinions are like.... and everyone has one but, I'm looking for a sub$1600 steel hardtail 29er (already have a 26er and just want a 29er too). I'm leaning toward multi speed but haven't ruled out SS (not the greatest in my area though). I've considered building up a Vassago Jaberwocky w/ the adaptor for a r/d or the Bandersnatch, a Marin Pine Mountain (2011) or a Stumpjumper (I can get a good deal on a demo). What's your experience or lack of w/ any of the above? I ride single track, rock gardens and whatever else I have the courage to ride through or over. Thanks guys

Try and save your pennies to go up to whatever the cost of this is; then, give us a ride report :thumb:

Salsa El Mariachi. The newer ones have an awesome set of Alternator drop outs so you can run either geared or SS with easy set up. Looks cleaner than adjustable horizontal drop outs. I have both a El Mar and a 650B'd Ala Carte, nothing beats a lovely riding steel bike.

I promised my wife that only "bike money" would pay for the new addition so, I'll be selling off a few of my old steel road bikes to fund this further. I've even toned down my beer consumption!

Add Niner to the list. Either the SIR9 or MCR9. The MCR is the best handling 29er I have owned - also have a Stumpy setup SS(pretty good as well, but the frame is super stiff). The MCR is great for longer XC/trail rides - no problem putting 3-4 hr rides in on that.

I couldn't be HAPPIER or more satisfied with my Jabber...loved it so much,soon after it's buildup (since funds were available...almost NEVER happens,LOL) I built up a Bander too :thumb:
