New Drivetrain - Which one should I choose?
I'm assuming this is where I should post this as the bike is a rigid MTB.
I've put enough miles on my 2000' Raleigh M50 that the drivetrain is...well...about dead from thousands of miles of road use. I'm just getting to the point where under high load, it skips, etc, my front derailer is bent slightly, my chainrings are looking more like a bunch of sharks in a conga line every day - and the C90 crank is welded together. I could have kept it going longer if I'd replaced the chain more often, but it's an Altus C90/Acera 7-speed system that has done great deeds, but is rickety.
Since I've replaced almost every other part of the bike except for the seatpost and frame, I'm opting to pick a new drivetrain groupset, or combination thereof to upgrade up. This bike is used for a lot of things - a commuter, snow bike, hiking approaches, cargo and I'd like to get into some mild singletrack and some real far-flung bikepacking in the Cascades.
My choices thus far based on my budget are thus. All but one are minus the brakes as I have a BB7 disc up front and a V-brake in the rear that work fine.
Most likely:
A) Full 2012 SRAM X-7 10x2 - Double chainrings are easier for me to clean at the end of the day. Gear range is excellent.
B) Full Shimano SLX - History of reliability
or to make things interesting
C) The Salsa Fargo Sorta-imitation - Salsa Woodchipper bars with Tektro V-drop hoods and barcons married to an X-7 or SLX drivetrain. - Opens the bike up to some nice touring/bikepacking possibilities. Yes, panniers fit just fine with no heel strike issues.
D) The Salsa Fargo Knockoff - Salsa Woodchipper bars with new front/rear road BB7 brakes (for correct throw) and SRAM Apex hoods married to an X-7 drivetrain. Only difference from the Fargo is it uses an X-9 in the rear..... Probably too expensive for my blood, but what the hey, here it is.
Or if I was smart
E) Full Shimano Deore
F) Replace the crank with whatever, bend the derailer back, new 7 speed cassette, and new rear derailer of something above Acera......

The reason I'm putting some $$$ into it is the rest of the "bike" has already had some attention.
Wheels: Sun Rhyno Lite with DeoreXT hubs
The Whole Front End: Salsa Cromoto 26" rigid fork with new headset, XLC handlebars, AVID BB7 Disc brakes
I should correct myself from earlier. Did I say upgrade? This is an intentional piece-wise custom scratchbuild. lol
