Wide bars...low rise...???

As far as aesthetics go, this is one of the sweetest looking bar/stem setup I've ever seen. Why do you suppose though...nobody (that I've seen) makes stoopid-wide HiRise bars? The wider your bar, the closer your face is to the stem. Like when you do a push-up. Wide stance= closer to the ground. Hands closer together= higher off the ground. I would think that the wider you get 'em, the higher you'd want'em.


The Gravity Light OS is available in 800, but only 25mm rise...though you can get a 710 at 40mm.

I know lotz of peeps be diggin the low rise these days, but I just don't like the taste of it.

There are quite a few wide and flat bars now. I just recently tried a Sunline 29.5" flat bar. Didn't dig ghe angles htough - my wrists like my bars rolled more forward, and the flat bar sweeps didn't work well with that.

Compromised with a Race Face 31" bar, 1'2" rise. Stems 70mm, and run upside down to get engative rise. No spacers underneath.

I find this lets me weight the front end very nicely, yet still is balanced and easy to get body weight back when needed.

The wide bars are awesome, and no, they really don't cause issues in tight trees. You get used to them.

A couple spots where I was riding last Friday were physically tighter than the width of my bars. Front wheel lift and turns takes care of getting through those tree sections. (not me in the pic, but you get the idea. about 3" narrower than my bars. no trouble.)

I got the Syncros 31s (20 mm) at the start of last season and rode them my first two races. Everything else about them was right - - nice leverage, 9° sweep, etc. but they didn't "feel" right; although I couldn't put my finger on it at the time. My second race culminated in that HUGE endo off the Seattle Line at Beacon (that you may have seen video of earlier this year).

My next race was the ProGRT at Port Angeles, WA and I left the bars on for my first two practices. Whole bike felt sketchy in the big steeps and I figured out why: just like you said, ed, with my wingspan stretched wider and the minimalist rise, it was biasing my weight uncomfortably over the front end. Felt like I was on the verge of OTB too many times. Went back to my 38mm rise 745 Sunline bars (5x9 sweep) and it's like you threw a light switch. Bike instantly felt at home again and felt like I was in control of the course.


Setup to date: 47mm zero-rise direct-mount stem (adjustable to 42), 745mm bars/38mm rise/5° upsweep/9° backwseep.

Mmmmmmmm...745x38 sounds nice.

My EA70's are only 685, but they're 40 rise.

I recently when from a 685 EC70 with 40 rise to a 711 Haven with 25 rise. It turns out, that I didn't need more rise, my arms are long enough that the higher bar was hurting my control. I use a 70mm stem and could probably stand to go even wider in the bar, but I don't need to get any lower.
