Tire Size

My bike came with Kenda 26" x 1.95 tires. How much bigger could I go or does it depend on the rim size?

All depends on the clearance of your frame & fork

As big as will fit in the frame/fork.

ETA: Read the current thread: 'What width is your tires actually.'

Most forks tend to top out at 2.3. My bike would actually accept 2.5 on both front and rear if the front derailleur wasn't in the way.

If I haven't use a tire or seen & measured it on a friend's bike, what I do is to buy a tire locally from a trusted LBS that will let me exchange it if it doesn't fit.

After that first set it's totally your call as to whether to keep purchasing from the LBS or to try to get a better deal online. Some brands you can't hardly get online discounts anyway, like Bontrager and Specialized.
