CrankyBro's Candy...disappointment...
 

I pulled the Komodo down off the wall to check the rear wheel after I installed the "new" bearings and noticed the left pedal didn't spin all that freely.

I took it apart and was pretty disappointed in the construction of it.

Spindle>seal>o-ring>BUSHING>cage with clip mech>ball bearing>nut>end cap with O-ring

That's right! Only 1 ball bearing in that thing! Piss!! At least it was an Enduro ball bearing. I have to give them credit for that.:thumb:

The nylon / polymer / magic-plastic cage rides on the bushing which spins on the spindle via some Phil Wood. I gotta say, I'm pretty stinkin' disappointed there's not at least 2 ball bearings in the thing.

Makes me wanna machine my own out of 6061 and use one on each end.


That said...the things seem to work really well for me for as little as I maintain them. I mean...I've never serviced this pedal and it's never failed me. I cleaned it, Phil Wood'ed the crap out of it, and put it back together. It spins like crazy now.


(this is why it sucks to ride your bike int he slop...if you've gone a little too long on seals or 0-rings, you will surely know about it in a day or two)

Looks like the new Candy 3 has a needle inner with metal wings and body.

Not surprised at all. Look at Tyler's Twenty6 Predator pedal (his newest creation) is still running bushings. In the Prerunners and before, they were DU bushings (a self-lubtricating, porous bronze). Now, he's running a Turcite (for the uninititiated, Turcite is a self-lubricating plastic) bushing on the inner end and an Enduro bearing on the outboard end. And these are $200-$300 pedals.

Were the pedals in the OP the Candy C's?

Yup. Candy-C. My knees like the extra float that I get with a CB. I'm looking at the new Candy3's though. $80, bleh!

I actually just bought a pair of shoes that came with C's. My bike already had a set of 3's on it when I got it. You're making me worry about the C's now.

I have broken a few bearings in eggbeaters. Now that you mention it, the bearing is taking all of the side load. A second bearing instead of the bushing might help.

If they are working that well for you it doesn't sound like there is anything to be pretty stinkin' disappointed about...:rolleyes:

Good point, vik. I guess the smaller mass of the bushing also makes room for a larger diameter spindle as well. (which is probably a little more important in my situation)

I like the float and the ease of unclipping on CB pedals however the bearings are terrible. SPDs have better bearings as I've never seen a SPD need to be rebuilt. I don't even know if there are bearings for a SPD. CB pedals always need to be rebuilt and of course they sell a rebuild kit and bearings for it.

I ordered a bulk of 10 bearings from ebay for cheap this weekend. Enough for 5 rebuilds. I don't have any bushing slop, but the bearings are a little rumbly.

Maybe your balls fell out on the trail?

Are most pedal bearings, seals, and o-rings a standard size, or are they like most other areas on the bike where small measured differences make for large real life differences?
