Would this be a good trade?

I happen to have a pair of Shimano XTR V-brakes. A guy posted on CL that he was looking for some V-brakes. I told him a few things that I was looking for, which included a rear disk brake wheel. He's got a Deore hub laced to a Mavic rim. I have no idea what these brakes or his wheel might be worth. Would that be a good trade or should I look for some cash on top of the wheel?

i think you are winning on the trade....i would gladly give someone V brakes for a mavic wheel, assuming the wheel is not all banged up.

I was thinking it seemed pretty good to me. The XTRs seem to go for a tiny bit more $ than a wheel of that basic spec on the bay, but I feel like if the wheel is in good condition, it's worth it more to me to have a decent disk brake wheel than a set of v-brakes, even if they're "really nice" v-brakes. Guess I'll trade the guy straight up, then. Thanks, guys.

Not a lot of info on the wheel specs, it's not a Mavic wheel, but a Deore hub, laced to a Mavic rim, are they DB spokes, is the rim in true / any dents or dings, is it centerlock or 6 bolt, what condition is the hub / freehub in?

If in good condition, and the rotor fitting you need, probably about equal for the trade

OK, he just emailed me again to confirm the time to meet up and said that the rim is actually an Alex with the Deore hub. Stock wheel from an ~05 Stumpjumper, in good condition.

No way that rim came off a OEM Stumpy. It probably came off a Hard Rock. The 05 Rockhopper Disc had Sun rims with eyelets and the FSR XC had Mavic 117s.

I wouldn't trade away XTR V-brakes for anything less than a near-NEW wheelset. There's always a bike you can build up that'll need V's....

My 14-y-o daughter's bike, an upgraded Wally special, has a nice alloy crank, an old Specialized bar, Tektro carbon levers, a Mavic 819 rim laced to a Coda disc hub, BB7's, and Avid SD-7 V-brakes on the rear. The bike lost 5 pounds, and needs next to NO maintenance. ALL of that was recovered from other sources, and kept "just in case".

^ The way I see it, though, cheap generic no name V-brakes will stop your bike on a dime and put you OTB if you want just as well as XTRs. I didn't need them, but I needed a rear wheel. I ended up doing the wheel, which was Alex rim and Deore hub that spins smooth after I repacked it, a Ritchey Pro stem that's a little long for me but I figure I can use it as trade or $10 on CL, and $20 cash in trade for the XTRs in basically mint condition. I'm OK with how it worked out and think it was a pretty fair trade on both sides considering going rates for the items involved in the trade.

Definitely good you went for more than a straight up trade.
