Backyard Singletrack

Started cuttin some trails in my backyard a couple of days ago with my neighbor. So far we've got about 300ft or so done. Have a lot of work ahead of us but when its done its gonna be quite the course.

The canyon that we are working with.

Couple pics of the progress thus far:

Eventually it going to have hucks, drops, ladder bridges. transfers and whatever else we can dream up. I dont think ive ever been so stoked on digging.

If anybody has any tips on trail building please feel free to post. Any and all advice is welcome

Trail building is extremely rewarding. Make sure your trail is legal, otherwise be prepared for equally extreme disappointment when it gets shut down.

I think some remedial trailbuilding school is needed immediately. You can get some properly-coached practice at either cryptid's or my location. By the time you finish one of our trails, you will have the necessary advanced skills to proceed on your own project correctly.

Its all on private property so the legality of it shouldn't be an issue. Between me and my neighbors adjacent lot we have a plot of land that's roughly 5 acres wide and goes all the way to bottom of the canyon.

Looking good! Five acres sounds like plenty to me if you make good use of all the land.

I sit on 3 acres in Troy (suburb of michigan) and thats unheard of for my city. Back yard is open for the first half or so acre, and then it gets wooded for the rest... We have a fire trail at the end of the property, which is a plus considering some of the clearling is done for me, however its flat land, so pumptrack/lap race course at best. Thats next years project tho.... need to educate myself first..

Keep the pictures and any info coming

I don't own it, because I have nowhere to build a pump track, but I've ridden pump tracks that the author had a hand in: https://www.leelikesbikes.com/ebook-w...p-track-nation

Agree. I wish I had or even knew someone with enough land to be able to do this. Actually I do know people with enough land, they just aren't bikers so they wouldn't want to do it and wouldn't let me do it.

If you're ever in the NorCal area bring your bike and shovel and come ride. There's a ton of great riding in this area not just behind my house. Mark Weir was actually in the area a couple weeks ago to do a local race. Got a guest house if you wanna make a weekend of it. Offer stands for any BikeForums members.

DJ is going to have a few lines with 3-6 jumps inline depending on berms with a quarter pipe ending. Dirt is from Chico, Ca. Have a stock pile of about 200-250 yards at our yard. Should be enough for a few more jumps. Love Loam!

Too far away for me to haul, unfortunately, but if y'all were closer I could easily use up every last shovelful.

You guys might want to take into account that building with wood (e.g. that jump with the log on the lip) will cause you maintenance headaches down the road when it decays and settles. Not a real big deal, especially since this is your first adventure, you'll surely be doing a bunch of regrading and shaping anyway to get the lines tuned in. But it's something to think about.
