I saw a similar one in The Sharper Image once.. stupid idea... if you want a motorcycle get a motorcycle. If you want a bicycle, get a bicycle.

You tell em TRD. Here i was thinking folks half of the folks who bicycle do it for the physical benefit as well as the fun.

That looks like one of the best designs I have seen. It would be really great for some people, like if they want to get around by bike but can't do it otherwise. I'm not particularly interested in it.

OK if you want power go moped or whatever...they're basically taking one of the last few physical things you can do in this world and strapping a motor onto it.

Haha, well...that's pretty much how the motorcycle was invented. Bikes will never be eliminated by motorcycles. The people who would buy that likely wouldn't have bought a normal bike.

What about people who have a physical handicap, surely this bike would be better for them.... The bike wasnt built for technical steep climbs or single track , ithink the bike was built for somebody that wants to have that feeling of riding off road, but maybe arent able to because of a handicap, this bike was meant for fireroads, double track and generally wide, untechnical trails for a beginner rider.

bicycle menas human powered. If somebody has a handicap they can ride a moped, they have those little electric scooter things too.

Im sorry, but I dont wanna run into some handicap, or geezer on the trail, and have them wiz by me at 20mph on a "mtb" thats really a moped.

No offence DJ rider, but i doubt very much if they care what you think, as long as their having fun... i doubt if their bothered, i think it's a good idea... thats my opinion

Now I realize why I didn't want to look at this thread. The kickstand was all I needed to see....

I guess I should add a little more to my story....

The trail is somewhat technical, an agressive 3 mile climb with some challenging switchbacks.
The trail is not too bad right out of the parking lot, and that is where I encountered him.
He was an older gentleman, very nice guy. He said that this was too much trail for him and the bike, he had never been out here before and was headed back to the car.

We chatted briefly, as he asked to the quickest, easiest way back to the lot. He stated that he got the bike after his open heart surgery, as he really enjoyed biking in the past, but his endurance was impacted by his surgery, he thought that this elect assit would allow him to get out and continue to do something he really enjoyed.

He mostly rode a cruiser type bike on one of the many paved trails in the Denver area, and that is where he focuses on riding, the trail ride was a first event for him.

While I enjoy riding and currently can do so under my own power, I smiled as I saw him ride away, still doing what he enjoyed.

After riding for over 25 years as an adult, I realize that as I have gotten older, I have lost a bit, not as fast, can't climb as quick, but I still ride. If this bike helps someone to continue to ride, then I am all for it.

I recently added electric power assist to my mountain bike after suffering a broken femur from a fall off my bike. I'm 59 and now have a 15" rod and 3 pins holding it all together. I've regained about 75% power in the leg; it will never be quite "right" again. I've stayed away from technical trails for some years now. Mostly I enjoy rail to trail these days. The power assist allows me to use the bike like a gym machine.
I can decide how much effort I want to exert, rather than having the road decide for me. Unlike a gym machine, I get to be outdoors, doing something I've always been passionate about. I don't give a rat's ass what other people think of my "dweeb rig."
I've having a great time, and getting all the exercise I need.

Again I'm not disputing that there are SOME practical uses that I can get behind. They're just a lot more that I disagree with.

One huge problem with all electric bikes is that you have to be very careful about running out of juice. The range is limited and the bike is heavy, so when you run out of juice, it's a tough ride home. Most people will run out of power once. Then you have an abrupt change of view about the bike. I hope the power (fuel) indicator is a good one. This would be very bad for someone who really needs the motor.
