Wanted: 29er, SS, Rigid Fork, Disc Brakes -- what brands, models?

I want to buy a SS 29er with disc brakes and a rigid fork -- which brands and models should I be looking at? And BD stuff that's not terrible that meets these criterion? I mostly want to know what I should set my Craigslist alerts for. Thanks.

The ones I've seen so far include:

Surly Karate Monkey
Haro Mary
Raleigh XXIX

All out of the box stuff, don't want to build one from a frame. Others?

-Redline Monocog
-Salsa El Mariachi

If you're scouring CL, you can probly set your sights a bit higher cuz of the biggish selection 'round these parts

Redline

Only the Redline Monocog Flight 29er though, right? The other doesn't have discs.

lubes, what would you recommend to add? I'm not looking to spend tons of money, just want something to tool around with a bit, but I really like SS bikes (my road bike is a SS).

I would look at the Cannondale Trail SL3.

Thanks for the rec, that's one I haven't seen before. How much does it run new?

Papa Wheelie 02-16-12 06:00 PM

About $1,000 or so, weighing in around 25 pounds. I just went through all this, and between this and the Redline Flight Monocog, I was going to go with the Cannondale.

I bought a crazy 27.5" bike instead.

WARNING: Single Speeding is WAY FUN! Make sure your other bikes are OK with sitting and collecting dust. Just sayin'. :)

Yeah, I've never SS MTB'd, but I have ridden a SS on the road now for years -- I just love the simplicity of it (the fact that I suck at maintenance but can't stomach spending $$ at the LBS on a regular basis contributes to this love).

Prob no more than $700, probably buying used
18-19 inches
Indifferent, but prefer steel if possible

If you want used it's worth poking around the mtbr.com classified for a while.

Some geared bikes are easily converted to singlespeed. I got a Rockhopper 29er with crap components pretty cheap, swapped in a Salsa fork, replaced the outer ring with a bash guard, and put on a new rear wheel for under a grand. You could just use the existing rear wheel with some spacers. It is not the ideal way to go, but if you get a convertible geared bike cheap, it might be worth it.

I just picked up a '07 Redline monocog 29er single speed at a local pawn shop.. Great ride.. and easily upgraded to disc brakes (disc ready hubs, fork and frame).. Like papa wheelie said, great fun and yes, my other bikes may collect some dust..

GT Peace9r is another you could look out for. Alternatively, you could look into buying a frame and building it up. To fit your budget, everything would have to be used, but I think it could be done.

Edit...vassago jabberwocky
