Converting to single front sprocket, 11-36 rear. What are the best components?

Looking for suggestion on cassette, deraileur, shifter (flat bar), crank, pretty much everything I need to complete the swap.

Use what you have already. Remove the LHS shifter, two extra chainrings, swap the front derailleur for a chain guide.

Or

Buy an XTR cassette, derailleur, shifter, Paul crank and Chris King BB.

Why would you recommend the Chris King BB instead of a ceramic BB?

Sigh.

Threads like these are useless unless you (the OP) give more details.

What are you running now, what do you like and dislike about the setup? Going on a hardtail or full suspension? do you want/need a bash guard of some type or no? What's your budget? You can turn nearly any setup into a 1x setup, but it'd help considerably to know with what you have to work.

Basically just ditch the larger and smaller chain rings and swap the front derailer for a chain guide. Remove front shifter and cable and you're 1x9 or whatever you have in the rear. What do you mean by "what are the best components?" You could spend a Lot of money, so maybe specify your goals a little more here.

I've installed several of the CK bb's and own two myself. I don't have any creaking issues with mine or the ones I have installed. I'd take any review on MTBR with a heaping grain of salt - there are other parts that the creaking could be coming from and it could also come from poor installation.

I like CK because the bearings are made in house, it's easily serviceable, and it's just a quality product - like everything else CK. Of course, there are lots of good(and cheaper) options out there for BB's.

I picked the most expensive things that came to mind. Replacing things that ain't broke can be silly.

The only things you need extra are a chain guide or bash guard to help keep the chain on during rough stuff. And maybe different length chain ring bolts.
I recently converted my rig to a 1x7. I started by simply unhooking the front derailleur and using it as a chain guide. Rode it for a while to make double sure I was going to like it. Once I was sure, I removed the inner and outer rings, installed a bashguard and inner ring I bought really cheap, an voila! 1x7!
As far as the back end goes, I didn't mess with that, so I cant help you there.
