Thoughts on a Steelhead, or any FR HT?
Well I took the plunge and started parting out my Stumpjumper to get a more FR oriented trailbike. The fork alone brought me close to $500. Anyways, I am trying to decide what to build. Basically I want something strong thats still trail friendly. I'm leaning towards geared as its a bike that would probably be ridden around the neighborhood a lot. The primary frame I am currently looking at is an Azonic Steelhead XL. My goal for the build weight is around 30lbs.
I plan on using my current XT/Specialized crankset, XTR rear, LX front, RF shifters... wheels I will most likely take apart my 317's and lace them to Rynolites or something of that nature, though I think I would probably be ok for quite awhile on the 317's even. Brakes I want to go disc, and am thinking Avid BB7's might be good enough, though with the price I can get Shimano mechanicals at, they are tempting too. Probably run a 100mm, which is short in comparison to any stem I've ever used before.
Now for a fork, what is good? I know little about FR forks. I need light more than I need strong probably... I'm not very brave and don't intend to do any drop over 4-5ft... even those are in the distant future. The only one that comes to mind off the top of my head would be the RS Psylo and for Marz and Manitou I have no idea what they offer anymore. Can't afford a Fox. Figure in the $400-450 range for a fork.
Any comments on the proposed setup are welcome, or suggestions for a different/more appropriate frame.

Im pretty sure the Steelhead is more of a dirt jump rig, VERY popular over in the Uk with dirt jumpers.
Errrmm.... I would recommend a Psylo aswell actually.. Pretty good forks, i was going to say dirt jumper 2's i use mine for freeride and i love them, maybe something from the Stance series by manitou?
For the frame, what about a Brodie Holeshot? Nice frames and very gear friendly, not sure how a 100mm would work on that though, the stock bike has a Noxon, which i THINK is 130mm...

Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 3 or Manitou Sherman Flick or a Psylo if you can find a new one.

The Steelhead is listed as a dirtjump/urban/fr frame... good friend of mine has one rigged for fr and loves it. Anyways, its dirt cheap which is my main reason for checkin it out. I'll look into the Psylo (maybe i can find a good deal with the model change) or a Pike I think... despite my hatred for all things Rockshox, they are cheap

Gotta admit, if i was gonna buy a Rockshox i would definatly buy the Pike... Looks really nice... And yes, Seely you are right, they are dirt cheap.... i didnt realise they could be used for freeride, my bad, everyone over here uses it for dirt jumping so i automatically thought that it was a DJ frame

Hm, I'll have to check what my price is on the various forks... I'm thinkin a Psylo XC would be too wimpy? The adjustable travel kinda has my interest peaked, along with how cheap they are goin now.

steel fr frame and xc fork. Pyslo is decent though, stronger then the xc name insinuates.

I'll sell you a Marzocchi Z1 MCR, 130mm of travel, in awesome shape. I used it for light freeriding, and sorry to spam. PM if your interested, will sell cheap(SSVF valving system)
IMO - stick with Manitous and Marzocchi, from past experience, they seem to hold up the best, however RockShox do make nice stuff. the fox vanilla series are nice if you can find one cheap, their usually like 400ish i think. Im running the Vanilla 125r on my PX Pitbull for urban, held up real well and is buttery smooth
