I got my 520 by means of lay away at my LBS, since then I've been preparing for my CC trip this fall. The only things I've got offline are the things they didn't carry, Tubus racks, Ortlieb bags. Everything else I've gotten from them even if I could save a few bucks online. I even delivered a pizza on my bike,(I cook pizza for cash), last week. The first time anyone has ever brought them a pizza on a bike! The Mechanic rebuild my front hub for free, even though I offered to pay, and he told me right before I leave for my trip to come down to his house and he will show me how to fully take apart my bike and put it back together again. Going to my LBS is generally the highlight of my week, I work 60 hours at a low wage job saving money for my CC trip. They know I'm not rich and always work with me when they can, and I always bring them my business. If I only got things online I wouldn't have the extra's you get from being loyal to a LBS. Expert advice and what not!
When I move to Oregon I'll find another shop and be just as loyal, all part of the fun!

I came here looking for mt. bike information. How can anyone pass up a thread titled "How to be a jackass"? I should have passed it up because the OP was lacking BG panties regarding rude customers. I have a nice road bike purchased locally from a shop I can appreciate. Good prices, great service and competent staff abound there. Throw in a flame about the post and as I said it's not as funny as the Road forum. But I should have said Generation Y, not X.

I usually buy something at the lbs when I stop in, but not always. Typically if I ask them for advice I'll buy something from them. The most recent time I didn't but that was because it was a "bring your bike back in and we'll see what size you need" kind of thing (a FD shim that I knew what size I wanted but they weren't sure whether the numbers on the part were for the size of tubing or size it'd shim it to with the shims they had laying around) and I haven't had time to bring the bike back in yet.

So now we observe the subject (which we will refer to as bdswest) in a desperate attempt to justify his maniacal ravings, indeed in an effort to convince himself that he is an emotionally healthy, well adjusted individual. However, with heartbreaking predictability, he accomplishes quite the opposite, only managing to reveal the true extent of his psychosis.

This type of individual is pathologically incapable of heeding the first lesson of the proverbial man trapped in a hole, unable to climb out:

Horrible comparison. Fagerlin a very skilled rider. Also, he has more than two brain cells and does not drool on himself. Usually.

I support my LBS as far as is sensible but there's a lot of stuff that I buy online because of a huge difference in price.

Bottle cages - £3.99 online, £9.99 at LBS (possibly different brand but visually near-identical)
Brake pads - £4.99 online, £16.99 at LBS (different brand, comparing cheapest with cheapest here)
Cassette - £17.99 online, £34.99 at LBS (identical product)
Chain - £14.99 online, £19.99 at LBS (identical product)
Panniers - £63 online, £105 at LBS (identical product)
Rear rack - £20 online, £36 at LBS (identical product)

So put simply, to put two bottle cages on the bike, and buy the brake pads, chain and cassette, and add a rack and panniers would cost £128.95 online or £232.95 at the LBS. That's a saving of £104, or in US money the best part of $170. For that I can buy all the tools I need to measure chain extension, remove the cassette and still have a chunk of change left over. Even if the LBS gives me a 10% discount (which they sometimes do, depending on who is working when I'm in) the saving for buying online is still about £80, or almost 33%.

Well after reading this thread, I'm glad to know that I'm not a jackass. Though, I was pretty sure I wasn't beforehand. I buy everything for my bikes at my local shop, gotta support small business...and that online shop aint gonna help you with anything after the sale.

BTW, my first post here, nice to meet everyone...

The 2 Bike Shops here in Fayetteville NC don't carry touring gear of any type. So I got them online. But Im getting my crank set cassette derailleur brake pads chain tools and cycling gear at my bike shop. The prices don't differ that much from the online prices plus I love to hang out at the bike shop!
