bombproof bottle cage

Please forgive my ignorance of such matters - this will be my first bottle cage since camelbaks were invented.

Any suggestions for a secure, bombproof cage? it'll be mounted on the bottom of the downtube of an AM bike and needs to handle fast rocky descents and small drops. I imagine I could get some sort of rubbery strap to cinch it but I'd rather have a cage that doesn't need augmentation if such a thing exists. Bonus points awarded if it comes in purple ano but I'm not picky.

Bontrager RL cage, or Dimension. The cheap Dimension cages actually work pretty damn well, and i think they do come in purple.

I would find it difficult to forgive your ignorance in almost any matter.

(Oh crap . . . you're serious; it does have downtube WB bosses)

There should be a whole generation of FSR pilots with good answers.

The term "all mountain" is a marketing ploy, therefore I do not understand your question.

Further subnote: purple? This is going to get interesting. By interesting, I mean . . . oh, nevermind.

I merely used that term to differentiate it from the type of riding you do, aka "All Spin Class."

I'm bringing it back

Not purple but for 'bombproof,' I would go stainless. Plus the rubber buttons to help hold the bottle in. REI has a house-brand one that's worthy.

Ooooh, buuurn. Where's santiago so we can make fun of his latte at the trail head?

Daspydyr 04-16-12 10:23 AM

I just sujected all my CF All Mountain cages to an M80 pre test. Disastrous. If they can't survive an M80 they won't work for you. Sorry. CF is weak in all applications.

You remind me of the cartoon of the two guys riding on the elephant. Don't bother lifting the tail . . .

It probably works well for all-spin class. Unless you spin so hardcore that it FAILS CATASTROPHICALLY!

This got me thinking - somewhere I have a seat clamp setup off my old FSR that would allow me to put the cage behind the seatpost. Although saddle height adjustment would be a PITA, I bet it'd be more secure back there as opposed to the bottom of the downtube. For either location I'm afraid I'll need to fashion some sort of pcad-esque bottle condome.

Joking is encouraged but the topic is no joke. I realized that my hydro pak weighs more than the stuff I carry in it. For most of my weekday rides I don't need anything besides a multitool & a phone in my pocket, and a water bottle. I don't see the point in lugging around all that other stuff if I don't need it 99% of the time. To a certain extent, it ties into pablo's "simplify" thread from the other day.

I think santiago once started a thread similar to this one inquiring about the best way to carry a four pack of wine coolers on his Big Dummy.

You're in luck too, 'cause those should be 30.9. If you need a second one holler; I still have one in in my stash of parts.
