Rear Suspension Adjustment Question

Hi all,

The rear suspension should be soft for DH and stiff for riding the trail? I suppose the stiff rear suspension gives better traction of rear tire when peaking?

My bike has coil as rear suspension. Are coil suspensions more durable than air ones?

Thanks

Depends on what feels best to you. But speaking purely from a mechanical standpoint, you would want it to be plush (slow rebound) for DH, responsive (fast rebound) for XC.

Slow rebound = soft suspension, fast rebound = stiff suspension? I have coil spring in the rear, does that apply to coil?

Slow rebound = bounces back slowly (so it doesn't turn your bike into a pogo stick/catapult when you land a 20ft drop on 8" travel), fast rebound = bounces back quickly (so your bike doesn't bob slowly & sluggishly every time you ride over a 3" high root, thus wasting energy).

What kind of shock (brand, model) do you have? Rebound adjustment is a feature that varies from one shock/fork to another.

The bike is 10 yrs old and the coil is some no brand name. I need to confirm it as the bike is in the shop. I will report back. I dont think it has the option to adjust slow/fast rebound.

Happen to remember the brand/model of the bike? That, coupled with the color scheme, might allow me to figure out what shock came on the bike originally.

Hard to read what model it is on the top tube, but I'd be willing to bet that red knob is rebound adjustment. Usually clockwise is quicker rebound & vice versa. When you get it back, try it all the way adjusted one way & the other & just bounce it up & down to see if there's a noticeable difference.

Thanks for your help. The red knob has "+" and "-" on each side. I guess that mean something.
