The road set have their challenges set, but remember a road mile does not equal a mtb mile. 1 mile on a mtb is generally tougher than a mile on a road bike. Since the road set are basically held in bounds being flats descents, climbing, cobblestones and us as mtb'rs have flats, freeride lines, Downhill trails twisty technical singletrack, and all kind of variations, the challenge for us can be much more creative.

Miles don't count in this challenge, because of the road to trail difference, but this is the challenge. Over the current year(2005) you(If you accept) will have to through your rides do the following:
For the relative beginners:

1)Find a trail you have never or hardly ever rode.
2)Find the easyest line through it.
3)Find the hardest line through it.
4)Work your way up to the hardest line.

Now you don't have to focus on just that one trail, at least try it once or twice a week.

Or for the advance group:
You have two options:

Option one:
Go to the area that has the most trails in the smallest area and link up two or 3 times a week what would look like the toughest trail line up possible with as little road miles in between.

Will use based on points scale:
10 points for really tough with less than a mile of road.
7 points for somewhat tough with less than a mile of road.
5 points for really tough with 1-5 miles of road in between.
3 points for somewhat tough with 1-5 miles.
0-points for really tough and some what tough with 6+ miles in between.

Each time this is done post in this thread to give the count and post your total per date.

Option two:
Go through the season and make up a trail based on all your favorite trails. This is actually harder than it seems, there are requirements.
1)These trails have to challenge you in some form of way.
2)It can only be based on the trails you have ridden on during the year.
3)The trails have to be designed so that they can be benefitical and/or harmless to the environment. (Will post the link to these designing guidelines.)
4)A post that contains a trail map picture will have to be posted by December 31st, 2005 in order to be counted.

well, how about a 1km high hill that is steep enought to do 70kph down then a 5k off road track, up & downhill, with a lotta trees followed by 11.8 km of beach?

so, uh do we send in pics/vids of thiese things we've done or just tell everybody the little numbers on our speedo's or what?

I really wanna try out the third one. The technical terrain one will be pretty easy for me to loop a bunch of trails together and never go on the road, I am almost never on the road already. But building a trail....been a goal of mine to build a whole trail for a while.

Theres usually about 5months of deep powder snow. Very very difficult to ride on even pavement, and no potential trail riding

Don't want to know total trail miles, a trail could be short, but very difficult or long and very easy. Any longer stretches of road in between ruins a good trail ride.

I am confused.

Who exactly is involved in this challenge? Is there a competition between mountainbikers and roadies? Only between us mtbers? Or is it to challenge yourself and use this thread as a training log of sorts?

It's not a competition between anyone, it's a challenge for anyone to take on if they wish to take on one of the challenges listed.

I can't imagine how hundreds (thousands?) of mountain bikers stampeding through a pristine wilderness area that got little or no traffic ten years ago could be viewed as beneficial. I guess you just want to see elevated sections on the trail maps?

I'll work on the nearby trails, but it's not gonna be easy with school and all that, not to mention trails are sort of far away and if I were to finish the trail, I'd be taking public transportation back home, in the dark.

darn its march 6th and this started on march 1st and I have a foot or more of snow on the ground in minnesota! lol I won't be able to get out on trail till may because of melting and muddy trails
