Wow . . . just wow (a film review)

One of the perks of working for a Public TV station is, every now and then, I get to prescreen something that lands on the program manager's desk. In this case, it's a new film out by a Wenatchee, Wa production company about mountain biking access on public lands.

I was prepared to find a lame portrayal of our sport by a producer with only limited knowledge of what we are all about. As I started into the film and started to hear stories of access issues about places I was a bit familiar with, I was ready to get angry and disillusioned. But the more I watched and the more was being revealed, the more I was drawn in; and, by the end, I came away thinking this is probably one of the most important biking films, if not the most, that I may have ever seen.

This isn't a NWD or a Life Cycles or a Strength in Numbers or any of that. Yeah, it's got some great trails and kick-ass riding; but it is so much more. It's the story of communities that pulled together to carve legitimate a place for mountain biking in areas where it was being threatened. To me, this will be the must-see of 2012.

When/if we air it, it will be on KSPS (7). Program Manager wanted my take on whether or not it was worthwhile to acquire, so it could be a while. Funny, according to the film's tour calendar, there was supposed to be a showing at SFCC on the 25th by the Fat Tire Trail Riders; but looks like it's going to be Strength in Numbers instead.

Any chance of a DVD release or is this going to be an only-on-TV type deal? Can't ever see it getting shown around here

It actually showed at the Georgia Bike Summit - - Cine Bar Cafe - - in Athens. No future dates though, unfortunately. DVD is available ($24.99) on their site: http://pedaldriven.howellatthemoon.com/buy

BTW, this is not as new as I thought: it premiered at last year's Sea Otter. Just didn't get on my radar until this week; and it's still making the tour rounds.

Great movie. We had a big "Fat Tire Fest" here in Boise, and that movie was one of the main parts. I think that it is a good film to see for ALL public land users, regardless of how you desire to use our public lands.

Being from Wenatchee, I know the film maker Jamie Howell, and recognize alot of the riding areas that they showcase. The legal and illegal ones.

I believe it is the best mtn bike movie I have ever seen.

dminor, thanks for sharing your thoughts about Pedal-Driven. Our hope in making this film was that it would be an enjoyable film with beautiful scenery and some good riding, but more importantly that it would build awareness of mountain biking as a sustainable form of recreation and be utilized as a tool that either side - land managers and riders - could bring to the table. We'd love to be able to share this review publicly, if that's alright with you?

Regarding the tour, apparently the show is not coming to Spokane - yet - and it's been removed from the schedule. We'll be working with FTTRC to get a show there asap. You can check the tour calendar at pedaldriven.org/tour.

Also, as a non-profit film we depend on the support of the riding community to help us continue to fund outreach for the project, and any net proceeds will be used by IMBA to further promote sustainable trail projects in the Pacific Northwest. We hope you'll all consider buying a DVD for yourselves

Cheers,
Pedal-Driven team

Welcome to Bike Forums, PD. Yes, of course you can use the review; I wish now I'd written it a bit better :.

Every IMBA club should show this. Hope the FTTRC gets something going soon.

Also, if you haven't already, you should make sure Jon at Out There Monthly gets a press copy of it.
