front chain ring replacements
I had my New Talus 29 Sport up on the stand today for a cleaning and brake adjustments
I got to looking at the Largest chainring, that I have only used maybe 5 times, and it seems to be a total pc of junk. Every tooth on it appears different, Some are sharp, some are flat, in a very random order. The Raleigh website says its a Shimano Alivo MC430 Octalink 22/32/44t , I suppose I could call my dealer and ask, but I am sure there gonna say its fine. So my question to you guys is What I need to get to replace it? I imagine all 3 rings are the same quality I'd prefer to do the work myself, But I am just not sure what to get or where? Surely I can use my cranks and BB. I am on a budget, My riding is casual, Park trails, some off road trails appreciate any advice Thanks Dave |
Its much more likely that the different tooth profiles are by design (to aid shifting) rather than a result of poor manufacturing by Shimano.

very interesting, I was looking at chain rings on Jensons site, Shimano's and in the enlarged view they too looked irregular
I guess its suppose to be that way. Looks odd, looks worn out thanks Dave |

+2 shaped teeth are on purpose.
If you never use the large chainring, you could replace it with a bashguard. Nice for keeping the other chainrings from getting messed up when clearing big logs and other obstacles. |
