please please please help me i am upgrading to a better hardtail frame i have my eye on the norco torrent but im not sure if tis got v-brake mounts can someone tell me if it has or not please

why would you want to put V-brakes on a Torrent?
Its top of that range for C****t sake!

I think, because he is using it for dirt jumping, he might want to budget on the brakes or something
in reality, you only need a decent V brake on the back of a dirt jump rig because you dont do much braking aprt from when you want to stop

Lots of people in the UK do it, dunno what happens in the US though...

I was pretty sure that you would want a disc brake instead of a v-brake for DJ and freeride. You have better stopping ability. I'm with dave on this one, why would want v-brakes on the torrent.

I agree, i would want a front, and a back disc brake, even if it is for dirt jumping, although, a few people who are on a serious budget will only need a v brake for pure dirt jumping...

The 03 Torrent did have brake studs, but the 04 and 05 are disk only.

I know several hardcore dirt jumpers who run discs on the front and Vs on the back because the sheer torque created by trying to stop themselves after jumps will snap their frames at either the chainstay or seatstay if they use discs, regardless of how beefy the frame may be. They use one or more brake stiffeners to improve the stopping power of the Vs, but the only disc brakes they use are on the front.

Interesting how you make the topic name what it is, as for brake mounts just look at any picture of the frame and look for little studs that stick up about 1.5inches or so on either side

I only use one Rear brake on my bike, although its a very good one i have a Hope mono M4, will probably get a front brake at somepoint though...

Also, why would a disc brake snap the frame? The frame on Dirt jump rigs are Soid as a rock, and are built for hard hits, why would a dick brake, which are featured on XC bikes now and they're less strong as they're built to be lightweight, i dont understand how using a disc brake on the back will snap the frame..

the only way that i can imagine that working, is by slamming your brakes on seriously hard and quickly the put a huge stress on the frame, and usually you dont need to do that for dirt jumping, and even if you did, i still cant see the force of braking being strong enough to snap the frame...

no disc brake will snap a frame. JUst look at these downhill beasts with 8 inch rotors front and rear.

I'm an XC rider myself, so maybe my interpretation of the term "dirt jumping" is incorrect, but the guys I was referring to generally jump off these man-made dirt "jumps" (for lack of a better term) that are about three or four feet high. These jumps usually shoot them pretty high in the air (I'd guess at least ten feet, maybe more) where they do some crazy tricks and then land on the downslope of another jump. It's basically like motocross with mountain bikes. That's dirt jumping, isn't it? (I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I'm really not sure. The most air my bike sees is when I lift it down from its hook in the garage).

Anyway, I was hanging around watching them last summer and I noticed that they all ran v-brakes on the back. I assumed, like you, that disc brakes would be preferrable. When I asked them about it, they said that when they're coming down on a jump and need to stop immediately, the resulting torque created by the stopping power of a disc-brake versus their mass and velocity can snap the left chainstay or seatstay. I can't see why they'd make that up, because most of their rigs had disc mounts and they were all riding pretty nice bikes with discs on the front, so money obviously wasn't a concern.

Never heard of that, and honestly, i cant see how that would happen, my XC is kitted out with the best two disc brakes money could buy (imo) and they see some seriously hard braking, and thatb frame doesnt even flex nevermind snap...

Also, if something is going to snap when braking, it would be the fork i reckon, after all, thats only connectwed in one place, and the strength of braking would snap the fork rather than the frame....

That way, they dont need to slam they're brakes on...

After thinking about why they would run v-brake in the back and front disc I have come to this conclusion. Most of a persons stopping power comes from the front brake. We learned this when we started driving, the front brakes wear quicker than the back ones due to the fact of momentum change, shifting towards the front. This is also applied to road cycling, I use my front brake more than the rear, better stopping power. So the reason of dirt jumpers using a front disc brake is that is where the majority of their stopping power is going to come from and since disc brakes have a better stopping ablility than v-brakes, they place it on the front. Now why they have a v-brake in the back, I can't explain. Maybe its the back up in case the disc fails or maybe they couldn't afford both front and rear disc's. Or the bike doesn't except disc brakes and only the front fork does, so they opted to go that route.
