I'm building a bike, well the LBS is building it really. A Surly Instigator and it was going to have all LX componets and a Mazocchi Z1 Drop Off II. Well turns out, he can't get the Marzocchi Z1 Drop Off II it has been discontinued and he can't get an LX crank set or BB. So he said for an extra 100 bucks, he could get me the O5 Marzocchi All-Mountain III which has 130mm of travel like the Drop Off and a XT crank and BB. The totally for this well be (after the extra 100) 1777 including tax and build up. I thought it was pretty good. What do yall think?

Heheh to be serious, its the same fork. Not sure why you are paying 100$ more unless he was expecting to put a 2004 on your bike and save costs for you. Same internals and dropouts and steerer.

The XT cranks & BB are worth a decent portion of that $100 alone.

I don't think its worth it from the LX level to XT level. Its just nicer bearings...not $100 dollars worth tho.

That is my 2 cents. I believe LX is good enough for most applications. Taking it to XT is a expensive step.

Well, part of it was also the fact that he's getting an 05 fork instead of the 04. Perhaps I should have amended my statement to say that the upgrade from LX to XT *accounts for* a good portion of that. I'm not sure that XT is worth the upgrade either, but that's where a decent portion of that $100 could be coming from.

Yeah, something about how he couldn't get the LX crank and bearing from his distributor, he was out or something so I guess they offered the XT instead.

I just did the pricing on it. I found an XT crank for $190 and BB for $45 and the price diff. for the Drop-Off II and the All-Mountain III is $200. So I am basically getting $435 worth of equipment for $100. Man I think thats a deal.

Check out the comments of those who own this bike (or the frame anyway). I know very little of the brand, although it does seem to have good reviews. It's pretty heavy for a hardtail IMO, and the $1780 price seems very steep for what's included....

http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Frameset...ct_88163.shtml

Just my opinion.... If if makes "YOU" happy, then obviously it's priceless.... To you anyway.

Its a full LX kit with XT crank and BB, a Marzocchi All-Mountain III, Avid Mech brakes, XT wheel set and all the other stuff, ie stem, handlebar, pedals, tires, saddle. I did all the math on this and if I were to piece it together by myself the total would be well over 2000 some odd dollars. Your right it is a hardtail but then again I don't weigh 160lbs like some people. I'm 6'4 and 230lbs, I need something burly and stout especially if I'm going to be doing freeride. But I understand your concerns. Trust me, with this much money spent and me being a broke ass college student, I did more than enough research.

Surly doesn't make their frames to be light... they make them to be strong and to take lots of abuse... not to mention they seem to take little things into account when designing a frameset like tire clearance, toe overlap, riding position, everything. They seem to build their frames to do it all and do it all well.

You can't just add up the total price of all the components and then say it's a steal of a deal.... EVERY bike, ever made will add up to more than the whole package costs already assembled.... period. My fork & brakes alone add up to my entire bikes cost.

The bottom line is that if it makes "YOU" happy, who cares about everybody else? I sure don't....

Oh I know, your right Killer B. I wasn't adding up individual compnents, I was adding it as a kit from pricepoint. But your right as long as I'm happy. After every place I searched I found a good deal for the Austin area. I mean, I went to one shop, told him what I wanted and he told me to get a hardrock sport. I'm not putting down the hardrock in any way, I just don't think he knew what he was talking about. After I told him more of what I was planning to do he told me to get a Enduro, which is WAY over my price limit. I dunno, that guy didn't know what was going on. Went to a few other places and they were nice but didn't have what I wanted. Went back to my LBS and bam! he could basically get me whatever I wanted frame wise and build it however I needed it. So I went with him.
