avid ball bearing seven...
 

yes, i am going to purchase the avid mechanical ball bearing seven disc brake. i have read very very good reviews on these breaks, and they seem to be the best mechanical disc brakes that avid makes...is this true?

Now that I've been on the forums for a few months I've noticed how some questions just come in cycles...this question must get asked on a monthly basis, in some form or another.

I just got a set and love them so far. Without a doubt the easiest brakes to adjust. Easier than V-brakes and FAR easier than cantis.

I've got avids and love them. The things that make them so good are the adjustability and power.

avids are the best, after the brake-in period.

No, I wish. I studied some in college when I was in Civil Engineering. I speak fluent Spanish (Mom from Spain, Dad from Argentina) and was planning on graduating with a CE degree and fluent in 3 languages.

Didn't happen!

Ended up getting a degree in Construction Management and I'm making almost as much after 10 years than all my friends who stayed in CE.

Plus, I have a heck of a lot more time off!

I have a set and I was amazed at how well they stop, especially in the rain. Plus adjusting pad clearance is done by two knobs on the caliper. Simple and effective. They just plain work. You can't beat that with a stick. :)

Somehow I knew someone would pop off a smart remark after I made the stick comment... besides, what's more effective at locking up a wheel than a stick in the spokes? A derailleur in the spokes? ;)

Not really. A derailleur in the spokes is most likely to rip out a bunch of spokes THEN lock the wheel. A stick usually bridges laterally between a pair of spokes and uses the combined strength to lock the wheel. It's most effective when applied to the front wheel.

Not really.. sadly that's a phrase I use often and in this case it had an alternate meaning. But hey, a little humor on the forums is always a good thing. Now, back to the BB7's. My only complaint about them is the stock rotor. It's just plain ugly and I found it howls like mad. I quickly replaced mine with a set of wavy rotors (same ones on the Juicy 7). I noticed you switched yours out with the Mini Gothic.

Well, Hope calls the 165mm the "mini" for whatever ******** reason. The "Gothic" is the larger sizes. This is according to Jensonusa, so perhaps they've named them wrong.

Ahh. The Hope caliper they're intended for in this instance is the Hope Mini. If you'll look at them you'll see they aren't the same as the one's I have.

Aha! That's it! I'm assuming you stuck with 160mm? I managed to pick up my wavy's for $39 each, so I'm pretty happy. I think the aftermarket rotors look infinitely more trick than the lame stock ones.
