Pretty awesome. I'm not sure how far away they are when we see them fall, but I was amazed at the size of that one last night. I live near Horse Shoe, NC

I was driving home from my bike ride, heading SW. I saw what I thought was the "Evening" star about 1/3 the way up from the horizon. It was in the same travel path as the sun when it sits. I know enough about the stars to realize that the actual evening star is really one of the planets instead of a star. Well, when I saw it, it was just there in the sky, but about 3x brighter than the evening star usually is. At that very second, it dropped (very quickly) almost in a straight line down behind the mountains & horizon. My 1st thought was another major natural disaster was going to occur. Like one of the planets got out of sync or something. It was so close looking that I actually started wondering/worrying what I would do if all of a sudden the earth's gravity was disrupted or a giant earthquake happened before I made it home....

I never heard anything about it on the local news or here on the internet. It was amazing, but I guess you'd just had to see if for yourself.... I've seen many falling stars before, but none that I thought could be the morning or evening star....

I've since found out that what I saw was called a "FireBall", which is very similar to a meteorite but usually several times brighter.... Well, at least I can sleep now. :p

All I seen was the inside of my eyeballs, and the fact that it was really cloudy on Friday anyways. Must have been neat seeing.

Last Time we had a report of Lights in the sky in our part of the world, It was 6 Bikers trying out their new Lights on a Fast Downhill off our local hills.

Bet that brought most of the UK to a stand still aswell didnt it? lol

I've seen two meteorites in my life. Both times were back in Ontario, coming home from my local country tavern, The Swan on the Rideau.
My wife likes to draw a connection between where I was, what I saw, and what I drank.
I would swear on a stack of Barnett's manuals, that I saw meteorites!

What a coincidence. I saw one of about equal magnitude Thursday night. It was the best one I've ever seen, although I saw one of similar brightness several years ago. I guess it was about 9:30 PM pacific (midnight eastern). The sky was clear, but there was a very thin fog. All of the sudden there was a bright light directly overhead that I first thought was airplane landing lights. I immediately knew it was a meteor that slowly streaked about halfway to the horizon before fading. The cool part was the fog made it look like there was a halo around the meteor. Stunning! I had been in a pretty foul mood that evening, but I was stoked after that.

FYI, meteors are typically only visible for a hundred miles radius or so. There were probably quite a few people in North Carolina who saw it, but few out of the state. Also, even the bright meteors like that very seldom touch down. I've always wondered what the kind that do gain the distinction of becoming meteorites look like on their way down. I remember only a couple cases of "fireballs" making the news, and they were both old rocket stages burning up on re-entry. The flash was apparently so bright that it woke people up. I happened to be out of state for the one that fell over my county. :mad:
