Specialized HardRock resto project

hello all

just picked this HardRock as the base of a resto project:

yes, in case you were wondering, that is in fact heavenly sunlight® shinning down on this beauty :)

so the plan is to fix all the gremlins (and there are many starting with the completely stuck seat post set to fit someone 4' 3" and lower) and to build it into a light trail / grocery getter.

anybody know how to date these? i'd like to figure out what model year i've got. thanks

As it has Canti brakes, that puts it to 1997/8 very latest, V-brakes came in in 1996 and were virtually standard within 2 years, more likely 1993-6 .

For the bike, visually, it needs a new chain, or a very good clean of the old one, for what you want to do with it, maybe new slick tires and a rack (grocery getter part), as you have the mounts, thinking it may be too big for the intended recipiant, but hard to tell from the photo, wouldn't put too much else into it unless it really needs it.
