Trail Map/Guide?

I searched but couldn't find any info on this - probably using the wrong terminology.... If already discussed to death, please point me in the right direction.

I am in New Mexico and would like to do some trail/dirt road/singletrack riding. I know there are miles and miles of dirt roads/trails on Forest Service land that fit the bill. I also see a few "trail guides" advertised for sale. My question is: Are any of these trail guides worth purchasing? If so, is there a particular "brand" that is the best?

How are others doing this? Spot a trail via Google Earth and then go ride it or ?? I'd kinda like to know the difficulty and general condition in advance.

Thanks!

go to a bike shop and ask, they usually will point you to the best trail maps or info. go to a few different shops to make sure. check singletracks.com, or perhaps google "mtb trails in new mexico"

I would definitely recommend a local bike shop or outdoors store. I picked up Purple Lizard Maps. I'm not sure Purple Lizard has maps for NM but if they do I highly recommend them.

Dirt World has a handful of NM trail directions/reviews too.

Trails.com lists quite a few Albuquerque MTB trails and has maps too: https://www.trails.com/activity.aspx?area=10383

The Ski resorts have some great trails around them in addition to the lifts taking you to the top. Sandia hosts the King of the Mountain climb every summer. The east side of Albuquerque is riddled with trails.

WOW-just hit Dminors link to trails, YUP, that's them. Watch for snakes.

Strava phone app will list pretty much all the trails that people have ridden in your area (who use Strava). I use it on my Droid 3 and even though it uses the GPS feature, it does not suck down the battery fast. And it will tell you how far you rode, average mph, and change in elevation. You need to create an account (free) on their web site so the phone app can synch your rides. Online, you can add comments, and share your ride with others, and see who else has been riding in your area and their comments on the rides. Free for your phone, free online. At first I was frustrated with it, but after spending a hour playing with the phone app, I finally got the hang of the app and now really enjoy it.
