I rolled the dice and came up FRED!

I broke an old vow and bought a set of skinny tires. I like the color. Tossed a number onto ebay and the brown van brought me this. Its an ORCA, so I named it FLIPPER! I did that on "porpoise." Flipper, because as the song goes, Flipper.....faster than lightning, no one you see is faster than he!

But stink, first two rides and I have had to dodge traffic twice and been harrassed by dogs twice, once a large nasty Doberman. Anyway, hope I didn't loose too many Mountain bike Man Points by posting this.

I'm hoping the Obrea and Scott get together and produce a flock of nice hybrids! PSNAZ, the light is always on and the door is open!

Well, I can't approve of starting out on one of those ugly, harsh riding, plastic ones they're making these days or being one of "those guys" and impeding traffic so that you can ride your bike , but otherwise welcome to the other side of cycling. Road biking can be fun when it's too wet or hot out to mtb. Or some days when you just feel too lazy to load up the bike and drive to the trails, but you still want to get a short ride in. It's a decent back up option to still get in some "me time" on two wheels. Enjoy.

Sincerely,
Young "retro grouch" with paved cycling trails all over the city

(Honestly just teasing. I've ridden a carbon bike and it was nice, and I'm sure you're respectful of traffic. Don't know what to tell you about those dogs, though. Glad I've never been in that situation...)

Road is good for training or just getting your legs under you but not near the fun the mtb has to offer. My roadbike gets used very little during the summer.

My end of town has a ton of bike lanes that lead to the River Mountain trail system at Lake Mead. RM goes right by Bootleg Canyon so I can stop in for a Luna Bar and watch some maniac downhillers.

Welcome to the dark side!
Try riding in a road group, it's a blast and safer than riding alone. You might want to get some mace for the dogs, oh yeah, it works great. BTW, great choice in road bikes and good move starting out with plastic, why wait.
But come the fall, it's time to hang up the comfortable, plastic roadie and hit the mountain trails.
Hey I know it's a fun life, but somebody's got to do it.
