Any mtn bikers use a bike trainer?

Curious - any of you mtn bikers (not roadies who mtn bike) use bike trainers for training?

What's this 'training' concept of which you speak?

mrgrunt99 01-12-13 10:05 AM

if it is training you seek....then ride your bike you must...

I do in the winter. Riding two group spins a week at my LBS and will be doing one or two more/week on the spin bike at home with my wife starting this week. Plus I run 3-4 miles a day most days at lunch. I've done that the past couple winters and it really helps getting a jump on the season fitness-wise.

Spins at the shop are a bit loose in format but always ends up being a good workout. At home, we follow a set of about 35 Heart Zone Training spin routines integrally tied to our HRMs and most of those will kick your a** pretty good.

Winter is street/skatepark season. Summer, dirt and street.

Vegas Valley has gotten really chilly, 20's, bad for this boy. So I have plugged in the stationary. There I have said it, I am so ashamed, I ride an electric indoor bike.....

I ride my stationary bike for my early morning training rides during the winter. Its just plain dangerous to ride out at 4am in the pitch dark - even with good lights when there is a very good chance of ice on the road. If I take a fall I surely won't be be able to ride. Sadly 4am is my only open time slot thanks to a young family so I just have to ride the boring stationary bike or get fat.

That's where some good vids, like the Earthed series, helps the time pass a little easier. I've darned near fallen off the trainer, though trying to throw a whip along with the vid :o.

I'd rather run in the winter, which is something you can do in colder weather and worse conditions than bike, but yeah, I have a trainer. It's how I get caught up on movies I want to see.

This. Though it has to be unbelievably ****ty outside for me to get on the trainer. I'd rather trail run/snowshoe/drink beer with the dog, even in nasty weather.

I usually run and cross country ski when local trails are buried in snow, which they usually are for 2 to 3 months. Some trails get packed down enough to ride, but if I really want to get a fix of singletrack I have to head about 50 miles south.

.I also use a trainer... especially now with this cold snap. Got to a whopping 15 deg. F today in Flagstaff, Alaskazona and will probably dip near 10 below tonight. (but it's a dry cold.) :)

Just moved to Chicago area from Phoenix and I still haven't grown the cajones to ride when it's below freezing. 40's I can do, but below that nope! I sadly have started doing the trainer.

Do training wheels count?

A run-bike burns more calories and makes you a better rider.
