Run flat tires
Heard a long time ago about tires that are just about virtually flat proof. Since I've been away from cycling for 15 years thought i'd ask and see if that ever became a reality? :)
|
well, theres some stuff tahts pretty hard to get a flat with. Thorn resistant tubes are on option, really thick rubber and very heavy. I know theres "slime" which seems to have mixed opinions and check out http://www.notubes.com and look at the video

Pure myth. There is no such thing as a flatproof tire.
Myth busted. |
yea there really isnt such thing as a totally "flat proof" tire. just things that help prevent
|
I used a no-flat strip once, installed my tire back on the rim, and proceded to inflate. About 40 lbs. into the inflation, my rim's sidewall blew-out, instantly deafened me, cut my shoulder (½" laceration) with a piece of the flying shrapnel & took 3 yrs. off my lifespan.... I was l@@king to sue someone, or at least hit someone for inventing such a stupid & dangerous gimmick. I'd rather get a flat anyday....
DON'T USE THESE IF YOU VALUE YOUR EYESIGHT OR LIFE, ACTUALLY.... Could've punctured an artery, or hit me in the eye instead of my shoulder. |
I have these strips called "Mr. Tuffy" that is just a thick piece of rubber to create more space for thorn to enter the tire until it hits the tube and I rarely get flats with them. The only thing I hate is that they are hard to get lined right down the middle of the tire; they always slip around when I inflate but IMO its worth it.

tubeless still gets flats, dont kit yourself.
|
a thick dh tube and a dh tire can be riddin flat, just not hard.
|
Most pros prefer tubes to tubeless anyway. Personal preference!

Chris Kovarik runs the Ghetto BMX tubeless system. Well at least he did 3yrs ago.

Maybe there is such thing as a solid rubber tire for a bike?

Yeah, just like for the 4x4, right? Ya know they could invent it, but on the other hand, they'd never sell any replacements.... |
There are solid tube stuff out there. I have an old road bike i found with them. THey give a harsh ride, they're heavy, and i doubt they are good for your wheels. The pneumatic tire absorbs some shock, so its not so harsh on the rims. THese absorb nothing
|
There's no way in hell I'd ride one, but you wouldnt have to worry about flats! :p
|
They used solid tyres before pneumatic tyres. Pneumatictyres were actually invented first for bikes, then adapted for cars. You can still find solid tyres but they are bad for your rims. Pneumatic tyres absorb alot of shock, way more than you'd think and without this property your rims would DIE :crash:
