Walmart!

I just saw that Walmart is now offering a Hyper bike with Cam Zink's name on it. (I seem to remember Hyper being a big BMX name...when did they end up in Walmart?). https://www.walmart.com/ip/26-Hyper-C...Black/21616173

While I'm a bit amused that is has a chainguide, and it does look a little better than most of Walmart's offerings, what really caught my eye was this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/DK-Xenia-26-BMX-Bike/17012261
And this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/DK-Dayton-...-Bike/17012260
Whoa! Those actually look legit. When did Walmart start selling legit bikes? I don't know when DK ended up in Walmart either, but if someone came to me and said they absolutely had no bike shops to go to, I think I might actually tell them to pick up one of those over something from BikesDirect. I bet they're heavy, but you can do a lot worse. If they're constructed by Walmart employees, you might want to check their assembly, but hey, BD bikes don't come assembled either.

I think that's what I'm going to do now. Every time I see someone suggesting BikesDirect, I'm going to suggest a Walmart DK.

Just did a little reading - - Hyper's MTB product development program is headed up by Eric Carter. Wow, EC on a WalmMart Hyper? . . . coming to a race near you. Fascinating.

Along with a full cromo frame and 3-piece cranks. I've seen crappier BMX bikes in bike stores. Sucks that you're lining the Walmart corporate guys' pockets, and neither is a great bike, but you could certainly do a lot worse. I'd ride either one of them.

And like all WalMart bikes, they're assembled by the same clerk who assembles the 20" Pink bikes with wheels way out of tru, brakes not set correctly and derailer/shifter combos that send chains into the spokes or completely off the chainwheels.
IMHO, don't severe those ties with your bike shop just yet.

Same Pablo - - same Corsair. Pablo is still Corsair's designer and part-owner AFAIK but Corsair was sold to AtomLab.

I saw a Cannondale 29er (don't remember the model) on the floor at Costco a couple of months ago. Maybe the big chains are wisening up?

Diamond Back sold their soul to any marketing arm that would put their bikes on the floor like Dick's Sporting Goods.. I wonder about Salsa selling through Sports Authority. You don't get the most discerning buyers. But someone with some pull must have thouht it was a good idea.

Good poiont. Back in the late 90's, Derby made a move like that with the Nishiki brand, selling their bikes through big box stores. That's exactly what killed Nishiki in the US.
