Breaking in a new rig
Just put together a new rig (actually my local mechanic did it for absolutely free). I do mostly off-road and singletrack but he warned me not to get to agressive with the bike until it had a few hundred road km's on it. Until then I'll have to ride off-road with my other bike. Any ideas on what the break-in time or mileage should be for a completely new setup with all new parts.

i have never heard of doing this. Get a new bike but "not be agressive for a few hundred kms". I know you will likely have to do some adjustments becuase of cable stretch and whatnot, but nothing worth stressing over. A simple turn of the barell adjusters can fix this.

Bikes loosen..unless a steel frame, it might 'change'.
Basically if you set up your components = the cables stretch, bolts settle, a tune in a month. A new drive set perfect might need a tune in a month from stretch.
Make sure the bloody chainring bolts are tight!

Either he is feeing you BS, or he is not confident enough he knows what he is doing that the bike won't fall apart and kill you when it hits dirt. Cables stretch, OCCASIONALLY, but I stress extremely rarely, bolts with loosen. Ride where you are going to be riding and see how the bike performs where its going to be ridden, not on the road!

ya i agree no need to worry about break in. the first thing i did when i got my bike home was huck it off of the biggest thing i could find(which wasnt very big)mabey 4 feet, stupid ice. but ya thats what ive been doin since i got it, the only thing i noticed was a little bit of cable strech but not enough to affect shifting much at all, and all that means is that sumtime next week ill have to give the barrel adjuster a little bit of a turn. so no worries go ride your bike and have fun.
edit: i just had an epiphany, mabey he didnt want you doin anything extreme untill you got used to the bike.. i dunno thats my best guess
