Just bought a frame and I can't find any info on the size of the shock needed. Any ideas? I do not have the frame yet.

2000 Nail Trail came stock with a 3"-travel Manitou Magnum R. (https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...del=Nail+Trail) I have no idea of the Magnum's axle-to-crown but your best bet would be an 80mm fork to no more than a 100mm if you want to keep reasonably around the frame's stock geometry.

Edit: Found an AtoC of 440mm on the Magnum R. Hope that helps.

This thread confused the crap out of me until I realized that you need a fork, not a shock, and dminor figured that out and seamlessly gave you the info without comment. I, however, felt the need to comment.

Any mid-level suggestions? I see amazon and eBay have some for $60 shipped (I know I get what I pay for) but I won't be doing any serious off roading. The trails around here are more muddy to dusty and some roots from hell.

I respectfully disagree with ColinL about putting a 100mm fork on an early-2000s frame. Geometry on that vintage hardtail (in my experience) was a bit on the "XC-twitchy" side; 20mm over stock is what I would consider a conservative, acceptable upgrade that refines the trail manners of such a bike.Others will differ with my opinion no doubt but I stand by 20mm over as standard accepted limit of a 'stock-ish' travel change.

I was just concerned about the axle-to-crown length, ~30mm over stock sounds a little iffy to me. Should be fine unless a heavy rider lands a big jump flat.

I definitely want some height! I believe the steer tube height is 5-7/8".

Yeah, 100mm fork is fine.

MY2000 is a long way from vintage, it's just old. Suspension for XC was normally between 80-100mm then, long gone were the short travel (45-60mm) days. Putting anything upto 120mm on a frame from 2000 should cause no handling issues, and when using a 100mm fork, with sag taken into account, it will only have approx 80mm travel anyway.

FYI...from a Marin Tech
The thread size is 68 mm BB, standard english 1.370 X 24 TPI. Over the spindle ends is usually 113 mm depending on the cranks your using.

I would use a SRAM X5 crankset, it's the cheapest that uses the GXP bottom bracket which is my personal favorite because it is extremely easy to install and service.

Regarding the fork, I'd use one of the things dminor found. Rigid MTBs make my wrists and elbows very sad.

I've picked up almost all the parts I need but a bb and cranks. I am going to go 1x9 which saves me some money.

in that case then, I'd suggest raceface as they have a good yet affordable single crankset. I think it's the Ride, but don't quote me on that.
