Will painting old Specialized hard rock effect the value?
I have an old Specialized Hard Rock and the paint job on it is both ugly and messed up.
Would repainting it a solid color reduce the sales value?
I assume that I would have to strip the old paint off and then use a spray gun? Or what would be the best way to paint this? If at all?

It will depend on how good you are with a spray can. A good paint job should be helpful if the original is trashed. BUT how much work and money are you thinking you will have to spend to put quality paint on an old bike (HOW OLD IS IT?) What components are on the bike? The work involved in the paint job might cancel out the effort.

As Daspydyr said, how old is the bike? If you're talking about a 90s Hard Rock with old components and worn out paint, paint away. It's probably a $100 bike either way. And just how bad is this paint? I think pics and a year are in order for a decent answer, but I think you're over-thinking it either way. If you want to paint it, paint it. But don't do it if you think you're gonna get resale value out of it. The cost of paint will negate any value gained.

The Hardrock is on the lower end of the Specialized line not worth much on the vintage/classic market, even older ones. If you had a Stumpjumper that'd be a different story. Have at the respray.

Future Generations will post to this website asking if we can identify the frame as it has an aftermarket paint job!

I've only repainted one frame with rattle cans, a 2001 Hard Rock. I taped off all the original decals, painted the black section then the white. When I sold it, the repainting helped, but that's cause the colors were the same as the original. Still, for a Hard Rock, I'd do whatever you want to do, they aren't worth a whole lot.
