Looking at getting a new bike

I currently have an old Trek 4500. I'm looking into getting into more downhill riding/ gravity trails. I thinking of a full suspension bike but im not sure if I should get a downhill/freeride bike or stick with a all mountain bike type? Also what should I look for in a downhill/freeride bike? any other suggestions or help would be appreciated

What kinda budget are you working with? Check out the Scott Genius line for starters.

$1000 on the used market should pick up a huge variety of nice bikes. The Gambler is heavy but a solid Park and DHER. the Genius gives more options. Heavy enough for Park and some Dhing. But there will be a ton of used bikes out there.

Rent or borrow a normal bike and then a DH bike at a park, and see what you think. Make sure to find the trails that actually have some pedaling. This will no doubt cost some money, but it costs a lot less than buying the wrong bike.

You may have some trouble finding a fully operational DH bike for $1,000. I think probably more like $1,500+.
