Has anyone transported a shotgun on a MTB over dirt roads?

I am going chukar hunting in a couple weeks in the Lida, NV area. Ghost town, abandoned gold mining area. Old mining roads. Some areas accessible by bike, better than hiking in. But I have never transported a long gun on a bike. I am having trouble coming up with a plan. Is it possible.

If I got in a tumble zone I would walk it.

Never have, but, I don't see a problem. If you have a removable barrel, you could probably get it into a day pack with it hanging out at the top. This would be preferable to a shoulder sling, I would guess. And make sure you ride unloaded, even if it is on very easy trail.

Break it down and put it in a back pack should give it some protection from the accidental fall. Of course make sure it is unloaded before you take it apart...The other option I can see would be to use a sling and strap it rifle-style, unloaded, across your back while you rode. Less comfortable I expect, and at greater risk of damaging the shotgun if you fell.

I'm sure you already know this, but most shotguns are not "drop safe". The safety blocks the trigger, but does not prevent a sharp blow in the correct direction from disengaging the sear and dropping the hammer.

I've done that with a dirtbike and also 4 wheeler. Make the shoulder strap snug and you're set, as long as you're on fire roads and the like. Bumpy singletrack, you've got to break it down and get it in a more secure bag. A big enough frame backpack can probably fit a 30" barrel.

Thanks for the ideas, it is an 870 Wingmaster so the barrel detaches easily. Of course no ammo in the magazine and the chamber would be in two pieces. Then a long backpack, sounds like a good idea.

I vote for turret-mount. I feel a Rat Patrol joke coming on but will resist.

I grew up enjoying the RAT PATTROL! Great stuff.

The guys I am going hunting with has a dark history. A few years back they go to the end of a field and discovered the Audubon Society was there teaching bird watching classes. They were appalled at these grown men shooting little chukars. Little tasty chukars.

. . . while the bird watchers conveniently forget that Audubon got such accurate renderings because he shot most of his subjects .

Soft case with shoulder strap slung crossways across back. Done it myself at Stewart SF.

I never travel with a shotgun but will often carry an AR 15 and several hand guns when riding.. I will sometimes carry a bazooka.

Something like a hard case scabbard, fab up a mount for a rear rack on the bike. A Kolpin Gun Boot sort of case. Just keep it unloaded.

Something like this:

I like barrel pointed downward better than upward, even if unloaded. These things already exist for motorcycles. I'd adapt something from there.

OK, we've had a lot of fun at your expense, D. So I have to ask . . . how was the hunting? Chukkar and Hun populations are supposed to be up in WA this year; what were you finding down there?

It was long walks and short ride with guns. We were so remote the only birds that could find our location were ravens and meadowlarks. We did jump some elk and coyotes, no deer, which is strange.

I disassembled the 870 and put it back into a soft gun case and then zip tied it to my camelback. I loaded my vest up with shells and it fit nicely into my M.U.L.E. I was top heavy, but didn't ride anything technical. I want to thank you for sending that cold front down that SNOWED on us Sunday morning. That was chilly for a desert rat.

If we do, will you show up? I would have preferred Ely. Google Lida, NV, or Goldfield. schnikes......
