I'll admit I used to use my multi tool for regular maintenance, at least the tools on it were the proper size

These tool kits you gangsters be talkin 'bout. I would imagine a repair that would sideline you from riding the bike would be too serious to repair with a tool kit? So what kind of situations have you had to use your tool kits in where you wouldnt've been able to get home without it?

Nope. We change parts on the tandem a lot, so we're always adjusting stuff on rides. We've also broken the timing chain on the tandem when we didn't have a multi tool with a chain breaker. That was a long ride home. Last repair was for a squeaky disc brake. Not mine of course, someone else in a group ride.
