New Fat Bike Fad

Now that bikesdirect is selling $600 fat bikes will you be getting one? Seem like a fun thing to have?
Anyone ever ride one?

ColinL 10-09-13 08:08 AM

I rode a really cheap one that my wife's uncle bought about 2 years ago. Coaster brake with 2 speed kick-back internally geared hub.

What a piece of crap. The only thing it would be useful for is riding on sandy beaches with like 10psi in the tires.

However... before everyone gets up in arms... that bike is not representative of the whole range of fatbiking. Not even close! Could I see a use for a fatbike? I don't know. I know that 26x4 tires are NOT the same as having a suspension fork, and I know that I can't live without a suspension fork on singletrack. It could be a cool alternative to a cruiser, for me.

They are an awesome novelty. But $600, even $200 buys a ton of nachos and beer.

When Surly releases something for $100 I will give it a try.

Couldn't see myself on a full fat bike, but, would love to try a rigid chromo 29er with a 4 inch front tire. I think this combination just might add up to enough suspension for my old wrists.

I like the idea of it especially for winter riding but I don't know how much use i'd get out of it. I'm not sure the XC skiers would want me tearing up their little ski grooves.

I have fun on all kinds of terrain but I don't think that the Walgoose fat bike or that the bikes direct fat bike will be a accurate representation of what these things are capable of

That thing looks great. How is the riding in Japan? What type of riding do you use it for and do you like it?

noglider 10-10-13 08:33 AM

Probably not, as I barely ever even ride off road. But I'm dying to try a fat bike!

Dannihilator 10-10-13 08:20 PM

I'm not into them, wake me up when someone makes a rim for one that isn't singlewall.

I get the Walgoose but what is wrong with the BD fat bike? The frame/fork are a Diamant Mammut just with Motobecane stickers on it so says the R&D manager for Diamant & Nakamura bikes over on mtbr.com

cubex 10-11-13 03:13 AM

I guess I said too much hahaha. my bad.

nothing really wrong with the bikes direct and if your looking into getting into fat biking its probably a really good starting point. But the Walgoose I'm strongly against.

kingsqueak 10-11-13 06:42 AM

I'm totally curious how they ride...it might make riding the Pine Barrens trails enjoyable as the loose sand is pretty miserable on "normal" width MTB tires.

scrublover 10-11-13 07:40 PM

On-One Fatty rolling chassis and X.9 fat-bike crank will be at my door in a few days...

Swapping parts off my older hardtail, will report back. I'm not looking at it as a "snow bike" so much as just another fun bike in the stable. I think it'll be stupid fun on some of the slow speed rock crawly stuff around me. If I don't like it, will sell it off and move on. C'est la vie.

RoadMike 10-11-13 08:57 PM

I originally bought my Surly Pugsly as a snow bike but I've found it's a ton of fun for just bombing around on normal singletrack. I love how I can just blast through whatever on it. It's fun to go bushwhacking on too. Just like single speed, it's a different riding experience.

There are places around that rent FatBikes for fun in the snow, Park City, and around Yellowstone area. Think I may try that this winter, but can't see myself buying one.

I dunno man, the rims on my BD fatbike don't look singlewall to me.

I wouldn't mind having one to ride on venice and santa monica beaches, but i'm pretty sure they're "illegal to use" there...

Surly's rims are singlewall.

I've warmed up to fat bikes.

That's what I call a two week turnaround. Nice!

I don't ride a fat bike, but if I did, it would look like this:

Just kidding, if I dropped that, I'd never be able to pick it up again. #weaksauce

Was a lot longer than 2 weeks, had tried a pugsley a few years prior that I was not wild about the ride qualities.
