Changing Front Fork. What is a Tapered Steerer Fork & a Straight Steerer Fork?
 

Hi Guys,

Need your advise in explaining what is a Tapered Steerer Fork and a Straight Steerer Fork?

Can a Tapered Steerer Fork fit a Straight Steerer Fork Headset or Headtube?

I am currently using a Straight Steerer Fork (RockShox J3), can I change and fit a Tapered Steerer Fork to my frame? Do I need a special adapter for it?

I am planning to buy and install a Tapered Steerer Fork but not sure if it fits my bike Frame, Headtube and Headset. Below is the link of the Front Fork I want to get:

Can anyone advise what are the specifications of my Bike Frame, Headtube and Headset. And do i need to change the Headset to fit the Tapered Steerer Fork from Hongfu Bikes?

You need a straight steerer fork

You can get an adapter to put a straight in a tapered but not the other way around. A tapered just flat out wont fit in the straight head tube.

1) You cant use a fork with a tapered 1.5" to 1 1/8" steering tube as already mentioned, you need a fork with a straight 1 1/8" steering tube.

2) The fork you linked is for a 29" bike, you have a 26" bike so you'll need a fork for a 26" bike.

3) To keep the geometry the same you'll need a 100mm suspension corrected rigid fork.

Something like a Surly 1x1 100mm suspension corrected fork is what you need.

I am trying to find a Straight Steerer Carbon Fork with A-C at 470mm to keep the geometry the same at 100mm, for a corrected 100mm suspension fork, weighing at around 500 ~ 600 grams. Would you have any recommendation for such a Straight Steerer Carbon Fork?

Saw a website that says 29" Carbon Rigid Fork Straight Steerer, and the A-C at 470mm, and was wondering if can i still use it on my 26" bike?

A 100mm 26" suspension fork might have about a 470mm axle to crown measurement when it's fully extended but when subtract 20 to 25% sag it will be closer to 450mm.

That's why a 26" 100mm suspension corrected rigid fork has about 450mm axle to crown and not 470mm.

20 to 25% sag is what's generally used on suspension forks, you don't ride them fully extended.

Well, some of us like to - - especially when we're in hoverbike mode . . . .
