Deal or No Deal? Trek STP 300

Bike: For sale on my local craigslist https://austin.craigslist.org/bik/4265459533.html

Me: Daily commuter on road bike. Looking to get first mountain bike on a student budget. Hoping to spend no more than $500.

Questions / Concerns:
(1) This one is clearly old - not sure of exact year but approx 2001. Clearly at the time this was high end but I don't know with evolution of technology if I'm better off with a high-end vintage bike such as this one or a more entry level modern bike. Specifically, is lack of disc brakes concerning? Is suspension technology outdated?
(2) Assuming that this isn't obsolete, what is a fair offer price?

Thanks in advance!

I am not an expert on MTB. I had a 930 that I upgraded to a Manitou SX something front shock. It sat for a long time and I lent it to my bosses boss to ride. Wouldn't you know it, but the shock locked up. I eventually rebuilt it but finding elastomers was not easy. So, I'd check the suspension components real well.
YMMV

+1 on "no deal"

He's spent too much for a lot of nice parts on that bike, but I'm always very wary of other people's old used carbon. Wouldn't recommend that bike to anyone who doesn't know exactly what to look for.
