Trek, Specialized, Cannondale and all the other major mass-producing brands sell new 29ers in that range. Granted, they're entry-level bikes, but still decent quality and you can always upgrade components in the future as needed.

This is not the answer you want to hear, but the best bike for the price is the one that fits you best. What works for me, might not work for you, so you really need to go out and experience the bikes first hand. At a given price point, all the major brands fall pretty much inline with each other component spec wise, so it all comes down to fit(both geometry and intended usage). If you go out and narrow down a few bikes that you like, then it will be easier to determine which bike is the best for the money when comparing component spec.

Trek x-caliber 6 or 7. I tried the REI brands diamondback and Novara. I was not impressed. They don't come with any awesome features like hydraulic brakes in the less than $800 models. At least you can get a Trek or Giant for that price and decent features.

Too many to mention. You should visit the manufacturer websites and then check your local shops to see if they carry any of them.
When I was shopping for a new mtb a couple years ago I had a $1000 limit and visited 4 or 5 local shops...rode everything I could and then chose the Cannondale based on geometry, fit, components and warranty.
I can't tell you what to buy because you're not me and you might like and/or might fit better on something totally different than what I like.

See if you can't find a 2013 model still at a store.....you can usually get a great deal on last year's model bikes. I just got into mountain biking and had a similar price range that you had. I found a 2013 Cannondale SL4 for a great deal. If you can't find an older model, then I would pick whatever bike fit you the best in the $700 range from the major companies.

That's how I just got my new road bike: 2013 Cannondale CAAD8 2300 for under $600. Store is blowing out last year's bikes to make room for 2014s.

+1... I have a Giant Revel 0 that was a 2013 left over and I was able to snag it about 30% off sticker. I was able to change the mechanical disc brakes to hydraulics and still came in under $600. You could also look on CL for a bike a year or two old that someone bought and either got hooked & upgraded or decided wasn't fot them.

If you're near a major college town, lots of college kids are starting to dump their bikes they bought earlier in the year and don't want to take home.

The Airborne Goblin is a solid value at that price range, mail order only though.

If you look at REI, see if they have one of their semi-regular 20% off coupons going on.

be careful and don't assume all hydraulic brakes will be better than all mech disc brakes - especially less expensive models. BB7's can be set up pretty nice
