Pick me a UST tire

Just bought a UST wheelset using Mavic 817 rims. Would appreciate any recommendations for UST tires.

I'm out here in San Diego, so the trails are usually hard packed dirt with sections of loose gravel, rock gardens, and a few sand traps.

Also, can I run regular tires on these rims instead of UST specific tires?

NOOOOOOOOO!!!

Those are the worst tires I've ever owned, do not buy them! They have absolutely no lateral grip thus making them horrendous for the average trail condition here in SoCal! I've used these tires and, in all my years of riding, I had the back end of my bike slide out from underneath me on only a couple of occasions. Once I had these rubberized pieces of crap mounted on there, I found myself sliding out all over the darn place.

Specialized Roll X, Panaracers or Hutchinson Spiders are all solid offerings but stay away from the Michelin's, they're terrible.

P.S. MTB Action did a HUGE tire test last year, it might be worth your while to try to find a copy of that magizine; I belive a Kenda model came out on top. The Michelin's were one of the worst rated on the test BTW.

Bad experience, eh?

I've been running Stans Tubeless for years with no issues. Finally made the jump to formalize the UST format as my rims are taking a beating.

Can I use regular tires on the UST rims? Anyone know...?

Yes you can but why would you want to? You're just going to have to use a tube, or Stan's goop to stay tubless. Just bone up and pay the extra couple of bucks for the UST tires and run slime in them and you won't be sorry in the slightest.

whats better stans tubless sealant or slime? And can you use stans sealant without using the liner if you have ust rims and tire?

btw how do you like the 817 rims? Im thinking of getting a set built to hope hubs.

A good friend of mine, who also happens to be good friends with Stan himself, used to run Stans with his standard UST system instead of Slime because he got the bottles of goop for free. After a couple of flats that didn't seal followed by tons of goop everywhere he finally swore off Stan's forever (he didn't tell Stan this of course) and bought himself a bottle of Slime.

I've used Slime in my tires for many years and, I can honestly say that, in that time, I have never had a single flat as the result of a puncture (I ripped the sidewall out of a tire once but that's not something ANY sealant is going to fix.)

i rememberthey rated kenda nevegal/blugoove number one. and rightly so. i just went out for a ride in 6 inches of wet slippery snow and they where amazing. the snow didnt stick to them very well and neither does mud. i just looked for that issue but i think i left it at school. i think the maxxis highrollers where somwhere up there too.. mabey someone else can tell you.

Nope, just a joke. I have never used tubeless, but I know I don't like the idea of it.
