Tires for sand

I've got an early 1990s Trek 820 with some modest upgrades. I'm obviously not a hardcore mountain biker but I do enjoy single-track trails and double-track virtually no maintenance roads. A lot of the trails around here go from hard packed, to loose loam, to soft sand several times within just a few miles.

I'm looking for recommendations on tires, both design and width, that will handle firm surfaces without being too rough but will still perform decently on sandy uphills. I've got some Bontrager general purpose MTB tires in 1.95" now and they are fine on packed trails and gravel roads, but I've had to hike-a-bike a number of times when I spun out uphill in softer sand. My present tires are also lacking when conditions get muddy. Looking at my clearances I'm sure I could go up to 2.3" or maybe even 2.5" if the side knobs weren't too prominent. Lots of room with the moderately knobby 1.95s.

I'd like to keep the price <$100 for the set but that limit is not firm.
