This is for those people brave enough to strip the brand name and paint off their bikes. They need the skill to totally break down a bike, strip the paint, than rebuild it. Please include pictures for proof.

Grasschopper I thought this needed its own thread. But I give total credit to you.

Oh yeah, what does B.A.R.E. stand for? Bare Aluminum Riders Entourage.

ROFLMAO

Great thread, thanks for the props. I am in. Great looking bike but I have to ask: why the hell do you have a chain stay protector on it?

What's wrong with chainstay protectors?

Nuttin'. My steel chain has gouged my (painted, sorry)aluminum frame quite a bit.

It keeps the annoying sound of chain slap to a minimum (not an issue for ss).

What have you found to be the best method for stripping the paint off? I'm in the middle of a stripping a bike now? I've tried several kinds of paint strippers, but they don't work well. Also, I think it would be very difficult to strip the paint around all the joints. Do you recommend getting it sand/bead blasted? Let me in on your magic tricks.

I used a foaming paint stripper that I got at WalMart in the paint section. It worked great but like you said it is a little more work around the joints. Just takes time. I used said paint stripper a puddy knife, several scotch brite pads and an xacto knife for the really tight areas.

Go to the hardware store and get a spray on striper. It was super easy and the paint basicly fell of.

As for the chainstay protector, it is to keep the soft aluminum from getting damaged and the noise from chain slap to a minimum.

My first experience with this was about 10 years ago with a (trick for the time) Trek 8000.

I bought several cans of the cheapest paint stripper I could find, laid the frame on the driveway and sprayed the stuff on. Let it sit all afternoon, while I did other important looking stuff, then hosed it all off.

After that I spent about an hour with wetsanding paper and steel wool. That was it.

It looked like a total junkyard dog. And I loved it. You could still see some red paint in the cracks and crevices.

Every time I see this thread, I think it sez B.A.R.F. which stands for Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Dammit!
