Sizing for a Mountain Bike.
 

Good morning,

I am looking at a Gary Fisher Tassajara. Its a 18" I am 6 ' with a 33 inseam. Some charts say this is to small for me and some say its ok but on the low side. Any thoughts?

its probably on the smallish side for you but may be able to work fine with a longer stem and or seatpost (setback maybe)..I prefer a smaller bike when between 2 sizes. It will come down to if you can get comfortable on it or not and the type or riding you'll be doing.

I'm 188cm and find a 20.5 is ideal. I'm thinking 18 is too small. I'd go for 19.

I like the bike but I may keep looking for a larger one.

I prefer a smaller bike to a larger one. My road bikes are all a few sizes too small. I was lucky enough to score a 20.5funi xc frame a few yeara back. Its exactly the right size. I'd go to a shop and sit on a few different sizes you'll soon figure out what feels best. Then you can find a good second hand bike. Too big is really uncomfortable on an mtb, you can't get the vontrol you need for single track.

I rode a Tass for a while. The thing with Fishers is that they used what they called Genesis geometry, which I think was mostly a longer top tube than other bikes that same size, and IMO made the bike feel a little bigger. The thing with mountain bikes is that the sizing is less of a science and more of an art than road bike sizing. The best way to know what fits is to test ride it and see how it feels. The Tass was a solid bike, but that bike is old enough that I don't think I'd pay much more than $150ish for it, and that's assuming everything is in good condition.

Too small. You'll need a L frame.

I'm 5'7" and I ride an 18." You'll need a 21".

I liked their standard geometry on my mid 90s Gary Fisher Aquila. That one was a 17.5".

I have a 21" frame that is a bit too big for me. I kinda regret taking a 21 when I was offered a 19 for the same price in the shop. The 19 would be so much better on jumps I think now, it also had a more modern frame geometry. I'd say it depends on what exactly will you be doing with your bike.
