disk brakes
 

the brakes on my hardrock are starting to wear out and i could get them service but for the type of riding i do i think they need to be upgraded to disks.
which set would you reccomend. im on about a £100 budget for both front and rear

Well i order to upgrade to disc brakes you require a frame with the mounts, a fork with the mounts, and hubs with the moun for rotors. Im not sure the hardrock will have that for its price but i may be wrong. you may wish to check

well my new fork has disk mounts but im not sure about the hubs

Avid discs...

they'll have 6 holes to mount the rotor. on the left side of the hub

Yea it will be pretty evident if they are disc hubs or not. If your frame has no disc mounts thats alright, you can get away with disc in front since thats the primary brake anyways

You'll have at least $350 just in the wheelset & brakeset. I'd considering saving for a new bike myself.... You'll never get your money back out of the bike unless you piece part it. A friend of mine bought a used ($300) FS bike then bought a disc wheelset & brakes, and a new fork. He now has a $800 bike that's 6 yrs.old....
I paid $200 more for my '04 HARO X2 that was already loaded, and needed nothing. Go figure....

Do a search on Ebay under "deore" in the sporting goods section and you may get a nice surprise. In the last few months a shop in Holland(?) has been selling deore mechanical systems complete from lever to caliper with the matching deore disk hubs at a very reasonable price. Its not cutting edge stuff but is an option for the first disk setup. Speaking of which I can only recommend them. My disks are pretty much bottom range stuff, tektro mechs and they are still a huge improvement over any V I've ridden including a mates older XTR setup. More stopping power and a leap forward in control. :)

I found a good deal on JensonUSA , for some wheelsets, only for disc brakes for $145, the Sun ringle/ single track. I know its out of your budget. But I also found some "disposable" brakes. They were like 19 bucks, by Tektro. Those will work until you get some more money in your pocket if you can't wait and save. I am going through the same thing you are. V-brakes just don't cut it.

I just did the ebay search myself and they are not complete, you still have to source levers and cables yourself. The last set I watched went for 93$AU or about 35 Pounds

my parents are probably gunna be able to buy me a new set of wheels cause i told them how dangerous it would be without a front brake so il search for some nice tough wheels for myself :p

I agree with the guy who said just get a better bike. Upgrading is an addiction and as soon as you get this new stuff you will want more. It really does make more sense to sell that bike, save some $$$, and drop like $1000 on a bike that is fully loaded and doesn't need upgrades. It seems like a lot, but it will be less in the long run.

:roflmao: There's no such animal. I can add upgrades to just about every production bike out there. I get the jist but the phrasing is off:beer:

I just bought an Avid mechanical front disc brake for $70 from Pricepoint and a new Ritchey WCS disc front wheel for $65 on Ebay. With the Avid I don't have to buy a new lever and cable so I save money there. Add in about $20 for shipping and my total comes to $155 for a disc brake upgrade for one wheel. Unless you find some POS wheel and brake set, I think that's about as inexpensive as it gets for a disc brake upgrade. And that's only for the front wheel. The back will cost you more.
