Any problems with new XT shifter/brake levers?

I was just wondering if anybody is having any problems with the 2005 XT brake/shifter lever setup. Mine has broken twice in two weeks. Am I just really careless or is there some defect or weakness I haven't heard of.

I believe you could call them that. Shift flip up/down, brake pull, 1 lever does all

Ok just verifying what you were talking about. I'm sure someone will be here shortly to 1. rant or praise them and 2. give you some info. 2 is optional

I DESPISE flippy levers. I like them on road bikes, where they make sense, but not on a MTB

They are so ugly I wouldn't think of using them. I like to choose my own brakes, so SRAM got my cash on the latest upgrade.

I've been using the XTs on my bike for about a year now and have had zero problems. I've ridden some pretty technical stuff with them and managed to slam them into a rock on the first ride after mounting them (fast, technical, rocky trail...I went over the handlebars but stayed clipped in - yay - and slammed the front end of my bike into the nice, soft, large rock below ) and haven't had a single problem other than user induced scratches/gouges.

If you've broken two sets of these things, there's about a 99.9% chance that you're doing something wrong. Either that or you're one of the unluckiest human beings on the face of the Earth.

They obviously are meant only for XC use, so of course they suck for FR/DH applications. They are great for XC though, and I have had 0 problems with mine after a year+ of use. Mine survived a 5 foot nosedive into concrete, and assorted other crashes.

Are you clamping yours to the bar too tightly? Like a brake lever, they should be set up so they will rotate on the bar on impact, not so they are so tight that the unit absorbs the whole impact.

Are you asking me?...I don't run em. I was just pointing out that that statement is false. Remember flpippy shifters were initially part of Saint the fr lineup

Actually, it's not. While they are primarily an XC component, a virtually identical model is included in the "Hone" lineup which is intended for more abusive riding. I will ammend my original statement however and say that he's either installing them improperly or he needs to modify the way he rides since there's no way these things should just snap unless you're leaning on them or putting the kung-fu, death grip on them for an extended period of time.

At any rate they're excellent components and were surprisingly easy to get used to.

Yes it is. Originaly, the saint came with flippy shifters. They only offer alternatives this year. Hone is 'officially' new to this year and is a cheap version of the saint.

I don't feel like arguing with a xc guy about the merrits or demerrits of the flippy shifter system. I have been through that before and we just think differently.

I ride XC (mainly because that's about all we have) and I agree with you Flippys flat out suck, and not in a good way either

I should note, I am thouroughly impressed they turned back and at least offered rapid fire. That really did show me a little about the company (now if only they wouldn't force RR down my throat )

To each his own; have you actually used them for more than a test ride or are you basing your opinion entirely upon speculation and conjecture?

Like I've said before the only thing I'll use willingly that's Rapid Rise is yeast.

I've done a few days on them on various bikes doing dh and trail riding (with skinnies)...didn't suit me in the least. RR makes no sense imo. At this point I don't know anyone running them on bikes, even the pro team that shimano created to endorss Saint refused to run the flippy shifters. That says a lot considering that pros are usually forced to ride whatever is given them (one of the guys, hates the system so much he went to roholff...)

Speaking strictly of saint and hone...don't give a rates ass about xtr or xt, those are xc parts for xc riders.
